An analytical investigation using aerodynamic limitations of several designs of high stage pressure ratio multistage compressors

Description: From Introduction: "As more quantitative information becomes available, more will be known of the maximum stage total-pressure ratios that can be used while maintaining acceptable efficiences and weight flows. Because quantitative knowledge is limited, the qualitative nature of limiting factors and trends are investigated herein."

Application of the Von Kármán momentum theorem to turbulent boundary layers

Description: Report presenting a study of the Von Kármán momentum theorum with respect to its application to turbulent boundary layers in a positive pressure gradient. The results indicate that the streamwise derivative of the turbulent longitudinal momentum may be large near the separation and therefore should be considered when the momentum theorum is used for turbulent boundary layers near separation.

Approximate methods for calculating the flow about nonlifting bodies of revolution at high supersonic airspeeds

Description: Explicit expressions are developed which yield the Mach number and pressure distributions on the surfaces of pointed nonlifting bodies of revolution operating at high supersonic airspeeds and at values of the hypersonic similarity parameter (ratio of free-stream Mach number to slenderness ratio) greater than 1. Very simple explicit expressions are obtained for these distributions in the special case of slender bodies. In the case of cones, the analytic solutions accurately define the entire flo… more

Arrangement of Bodies of Revolution in Supersonic Flow to Reduce Wave Drag

Description: "The wave drag of a combination of slender bodies of revolution at zero angle of attack is studied with a view to determining the arrangements for which the total drag is a minimum. Linearized theory is used to calculate the pressure distribution in the field surrounding the bodies. The interference drag coefficient is computed for different arrangements. The special cases of two bodies and of a three-body combination with bilateral symmetry are considered" (p. 1).

Boiling Reactors: A Preliminary Investigation

Description: Technical report detailing kinetic equations that have been developed for a boiling-type reactor and inherent reactor stability studies that have been made on the basis of these equations. Presents features of the proposed reactor, comparisons of circulating types, investigations of bubble-rise velocities, effects of transient conditions of vapor mass in steam chest, and bubble time delay functions yield favorable results. Comparison of drag, pressure recovery, and surface pressure of a scoop-type inlet and an NACA submerged inlet at transonic speeds

Description: Report presenting an investigation of a solid half body modified to mount a scoop inlet and a submerged inlet while maintaining the same entrance geometry, afterbody, and diffuser for both inlets. Comparative pressure-recovery, pressure-distribution, and drag data were obtained for the two inlet types.

Concerning the Flow About Ring-Shaped Cowlings Part 6: Further Measurements on Inlet Devices

Description: "The present report presents as a supplement to the fourth report (available as ATI 5045, Air Materiel Command) in the series of investigations concerning the flow about ring-shaped cowlings further wind-tunnel measurements on inlet devices which are to show the influence of the radius of the nose of the cowling on the flow conditions. Moreover, a simple rule for the design of such arrangements, containing a hub in the interior, is suggested" (p. 1).

A correlation by means of transonic similarity rules of experimentally determined characteristics of a series of symmetrical and cambered wings of rectangular plan form

Description: Transonic similarity rules are applied to the correlation of experimental data for a series of related rectangular wings of varying aspect ratio, thickness, and camber. The data correlation is presented in two parts: the first part presents the correlation for a series of 22 wings having symmetrical NACA 63a-series sections; the second part is concerned with a study of one type of camber by correlation of the data for a series of 18 cambered wings having NACA 63a2xx and 63a4xx sections.

Critical Combinations of Bending, Shear, and Transverse Compressive Stresses for Buckling of Infinitely Long Flat Plates

Description: "Three-dimensional interaction surfaces are presented for the computation of elastic buckling stresses for an infinitely long flat plate subjected to combinations of bending, shear, and transverse compression in its plane - a loading approximating that occurring in a shear web. Surfaces are presented for two sets of edge conditions: both edges simply supported and lower edge simply supported, upper edge clamped. Present results are in good agreement with data for one-load and two-load limiting … more
