1.1-meter bore, 8-Tesla test facility

Description: The design and fabrication of a 1.1-m bore superconducting coil for an 8- T facility at Lawrence Livermore Laboratory are discussed. This facility will provide the backing field required for testing large multifilamentary Nb$sub 3$Sn coils as part of the superconductor development program at Livermore. The magnet measures 1.85 m o.d., is 1.5 m in length, and is solenoid wound in four separate modules. Total cold weight of the assembly is 18,000 Kg. 1.5 megawatt dc chopper power supplies for plasma shape control on Doublet III

Description: The Doublet III device is designed to study noncircular plasmas, including doublet and dee-shaped cross-sections. The plasma shape is determined by a system of 24 field-shaping coils which surround the vacuum vessel. Control of the magnetic flux linking these coils allows the plasma shape to be varied and controlled. This paper describes the high-speed dc chopper which is a major component of the field-shaping coil power system. The high-speed dc choppers, with a frequency response of up to 5 k… more

2 meg-ampere prototype levitated coil for multipole fusion

Description: The coils major diameter is 1.0 meter and it occupies a cross-section which is about 0.2 meter minor in diameter. The prototype coil will carry four times the current of the largest such magnet built to date. As a result, the peak induction in the coil is about 8 T and the stored magnetic energy will be around 3 MJ. The paper describes the proposed Nb/sub 3/SN superconductor, the quench protection system which is based on the LBL shorted secondary concept, the isochroic refrigeration storage sy… more

24-MW neutral-beam injector of 400-keV H/sup 0/

Description: The negative and positive ion systems have both common goals and common problems. In fact, we have identified five items that must be developed before any large, neutral-beam injector, operating continuously or almost so, can be engineered. The five items are: (1) a continuous or almost continuous ion source, with 1A designating a source of positive ions and 1B a direct extraction source of negatives, (2) a recirculating metal-vapor cell, (3) a computer code with which to calculate beam traject… more

40-kW field test power plant modification and development. Monthly technical status report No. 13, September 16, 1978-October 15, 1978

Description: The contract objective is to complete the design and development actions that upgrade the 40-kW fuel cell power plant to a configuration suitable for on-site demonstration testing. The modifications will improve operating capability, durability and maintenance interval and lead to reduced production costs. Equipment to recover and use the by-product heat of electric generation will be available on the power plant for field verification of on-site heat recovery. The 40-kW power plant will be com… more

60-inch annular pitch polisher for LASL's LASER-fusion effort

Description: The Antares laser will require that about 100 high-precision NaCl windows of 18-in. diameter be produced, maintained, and repaired. To aid the industry in achieving the required production rates, a polishing development program was undertaken by LASL's Laser Division in collaboration with the Air Force and International Laser Systems. The design and initial shakedown of the polishing machine is described. Preliminary results indicate the machine's design is sound, its operation is generally sim… more

241-T-106 tank leak investigation

Description: On June S, 1973, the 241-T-106 underground liquid waste storage tank, located on the U. S. Atomic Energy Commission's Hanford reservation, was confirmed as leaking. It was predicted that the leaked waste would be retained by the dry sediments well above the water table. A study was instigated to confirm this prediction. Results show the deepest penetration observed was 27 meters below the ground surface or 35 meters above the water table (approximately S7 and 116 feet, respectively). Based on t… more

1979 breeding bird censuses and summary of 1977-1979 results

Description: As part of a program to characterize the plant and animal life of the Laboratory site and the surrounding region, the two breeding bird censuses originated in 1977 were continued in 1979. Twelve census trips were made to the BNL plot and 10 to the Westhampton plot by seven volunteer observers. Comparisons of data from the three years showed that the number of territorial males on the BNL plot did not change significantly, but the number of breeding species showed a continuous decline, from 18 t… more

2XIIB computer data acquisition system

Description: All major plasma diagnostic measurements from the 2XIIB experiment are recorded, digitized, and stored by the computer data acquisition system. The raw data is then examined, correlated, reduced, and useful portions are quickly retrieved which direct the future conduct of the plasma experiment. This is done in real time and on line while the data is current. The immediate availability of this pertinent data has accelerated the rate at which the 2XII personnel have been able to gain knowledge in… more

2XIIB getter material problems

Description: The uniformity of wire characteristics is vital to the reliable long- time operation of the titanium alloy wire. Of particular importance is the diameter, total emissivity, and alloy mix. The getter wire must be operated at a minimum rate while the life is determined by the maximum rate. At a particular current the difference between the maximum and minimum rate is determined by variations in wire characteristics. Small percentage variations in these characteristics can result in large variatio… more

2XIIB status

Description: The 2XIIB CTR facility at LLL is described with emphasis on the engineering aspects of recent modifications. The current version of the 2X series of magnetic confinement experiments has been operating since the fall of 1974. The 2XIIB relies on pulsed-mirror coils to trap axially-injected low- energy ions. Subsequent heating of the ions is accomplished by energizing additional mirror coils to compress the plasma. Experiments prior to 2XIIB demonstrated plasma trapping and confinement in the pul… more

2XIIB vacuum vessel: a unique design

Description: The 2XIIB mirror confinement experiment makes unique demands on its vacuum system. The confinement coil set encloses a cavity whose surface is comprised of both simple and compound curves. Within this cavity and at the core of the machine is the operating vacuum which is on the order of 10$sup -9$ Torr. The vacuum container fits inside the cavity, presenting an inside surface suitable for titanium getter pumping and a means of removing the heat load imposed by incandescent sublimator wires. Ab initio effective core potentials including relativistic effects and their application to the electronic structure calculations of heavy atoms and molecules

Description: The effects of the 4f shell of electrons and the relativity of valence electrons are compared. The effect of 4f shell (lanthanide contraction) is estimated from the numerical Hartree-Fock (HF) calculations of pseudo-atoms corresponding to Hf, Re, Au, Hg, Tl, Pb and Bi without 4f electrons and with atomic numbers reduced by 14. The relativistic effect estimated from the numerical Dirac-Hartree-Fock (DHF) calculations of those atoms is comparable in the magnitude with that of the 4f shell of elec… more
