4 MW upgrade to DIII-D FWCD system: System commissioning and initial operation

Description: The initial installation of the 4 MW fast wave current drive (FWCD) upgrade started in 1992 with the purchase of two ABB/Thomcast AG rf power amplifiers. These amplifiers cover the frequency range 30 MHz to 120 MHz. A maximum output power of over 2 MW between 30 MHz and 80 MHz and 1 MW at 120 MHz were the specification requirements. The system as installed is comprised of the two mentioned rf amplifiers, coaxial transmission and matching components, rf phase and amplitude monitoring, and a SUN … more

241-AZ-101 pump removal trough analysis

Description: As part of the current Hanford mission of environmental cleanup, various long length equipment must be removed from highly radioactive waste tanks. The removal of equipment will utilize portions of the Equipment Removal System for Project W320 (ERS-W320), specifically the 50 ton hydraulic trailer system. Because the ERS-W320 system was designed to accommodate much heavier equipment it is adequate to support the dead weight of the trough, carriage and related equipment for 241AZ101 pump removal … more

1994 Environmental monitoring drinking water and nonradiological effluent programs annual report

Description: EG&G Idaho, Inc., initiated monitoring programs for drinking water in 1988 and for nonradiological parameters and pollutants in liquid effluents in 1985. These programs were initiated for the facilities operated by EG&G Idaho for the US Department of Energy at the Idaho National Engineering Laboratory. On October 1, 1994, Lockheed Idaho Technologies Company (LITCO) replaced EG&G Idaho as the prime contractor at the INEL and assumed responsibility for these programs. Section I discusses the gene… more

1995 solid waste 30-year characteristics volume summary

Description: The Hanford Site has been designated by the US Department of Energy (DOE) to store, treat, and dispose of solid waste received from both onsite and offsite generators. This waste is currently or planned to be generated from ongoing operations, maintenance and deactivation activities, decontamination and decommissioning (D&D) of facilities, and environmental restoration (ER) activities. A 2D fluid model of the DC planar magnetron cathode

Description: This model finds the plasma density distribution, n(x,y), and the positive electrical potential, {phi}{sub {infinity}}, between the surface of a planar magnetron cathode and a distant, uniform plasma. The intended application is for parameter studies of gas discharges in the range of 1--100 mTorr, which are often used as sputtering sources. The primary results are formulas which show how the spatial variation of the magnetic field, B(x,y), shapes the plasma density and influences the potential,… more

A 2D smart pixel detector for time-resolved protein crystallography

Description: A smart pixel detector is being developed for Time Resolved Crystallography for biological and material science applications. Using the Pixel detector presented here, the Laue method will enable the study of the evolution of structural changes that occur within the protein as a function of time. The x-ray pixellated detector is assembled to the integrated circuit through a bump bonding process. Within a pixel size of 150 x 150 {mu}m{sup 2}, a low noise preamplifier-shaper, a discriminator, a 3 … more

3D Fokker-Planck modeling of axisymmetric collisional losses of fusion products in TFTR

Description: Results of a 3D (in constants of motion space) Fokker-Planck simulation of collisional losses of fusion products in axisymmetric DT and DD discharges on TFTR are presented. The distributions of escaped ions over poloidal angle, pitch angle, and their energy spectra are obtained. Axisymmetric collisional losses of fusion products are found to be less than (2--5)%. The distribution of confined fusion products is shown to be strongly anisotropic and nonuniform in the radial coordinate mainly for s… more

Achieving Safety/Risk Goals for Less ATR Backup Power Upgrades

Description: The Advanced Test Reactor probabilistic risk assessment for internal fire and flood events defined a relatively high risk for a total loss of electric power possibly leading to core damage. Backup power sources were disabled due to fire and flooding in the diesel generator area with propagation of the flooding to a common switchgear room. The ATR risk assessment was employed to define options for relocation of backup power system components to achieve needed risk reduction while minimizing cost… more

Acoustic waves in random ensembles of magnetic fluxes

Description: To analyze the observational data and provide the appropriate diagnostic procedure for photospheric manifestation of solar oscillations it is necessary to take into account strong inhomogeneity of solar atmosphere with respect to distribution of magnetic fields. We study the collective phenomena in the propagation of acoustic waves and unsteady wave-packets through quite regions, sunspots and plages, including time-dependent response of these regions to solar oscillations, the energy transfer m… more

Acoustically enhanced remediation of contaminated soils and ground water. Volume 1

Description: The Phase 1 laboratory bench-scale investigation results have shown that acoustically enhanced remediation (AER) technology can significantly accelerate the ground water remediation of non-aqueous phase liquids (NAPLs) in unconsolidated soils. The testing also determined some of the acoustic parameters which maximize fluid and contaminant extraction rates. A technology merit and trade analysis identified the conditions under which AER could be successfully deployed in the field, and an analysis… more
