Aerodynamic Characteristics of Airfoils 4: Continuation of Reports Nos. 93, 124, and 182

Description: This collection of data on airfoils has been made from the published reports of a number of the leading Aerodynamic Laboratories of this country and Europe. The information which was originally expressed according to the different customs of the several laboratories is here presented in a uniform series of charts and tables suitable for the use of designing engineers and for purposes of general reference. The authority for the results here presented is given as the name of the laboratory at whi… more

Aerodynamic Computation of Gliders

Description: From Introduction: "In the following discussion, a knowledge of the theoretical principles of airplane construction is assumed, as presented in detail by Vogt and Lippisch in Nos. 7 and 10-19 of the 1919 volume of this publication. A few quantities will however be otherwise designated, in accordance with the Gottingen symbols."

Aerodynamic Laboratory at Cuatro Vientos

Description: This report presents a listing of the many experiments in aerodynamics taking place at Cuatro Vientos. Some of the studies include: testing spheres, in order to determine coefficients; mechanical and chemical tests of materials; and various tests of propeller strength and flexibility.

Airfoil lift with changing angle of attack

Description: From Summary: "Tests have been made in the atmospheric wind tunnel of the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics to determine the effects of pitching oscillations upon the lift of an airfoil. It has been found that the lift of an airfoil, while pitching, is usually less than that which would exist at the same angle of attack in the stationary condition, although exceptions may occur when the lift is small or if the angle of attack is being rapidly reduced. It is also shown that the behavio… more

Airplane Strength Calculations and Static Tests in Russia: An Attempt at Standardization

Description: We are here giving a summary of the rules established by the Theoretical Section of the Central Aerodynamic Institute of Moscow for the different calculation cases of an airplane. It appears the engineers of the Aerodynamic Institute considered only thick or medium profiles. For these profiles they have attempted to increase the safety when the center of pressure moves appreciably toward the trailing edge.

Albatros Commercial Airplane L 73

Description: The Albatros was a two engine commercial biplane carrying 2 pilots, eight passengers, and 160 KG of baggage. The framework is metal, the wings having plywood and fabric over the steel tubing. The L 73 was the first 2 engine biplane to be made in Germany.

Analysis of Dr. Schaffran's Propeller Model Tests

Description: Note presenting an analysis of the propeller model tests of Dr. Schaffran. Only the thrust is examined. The results indicate that the thrust produced by three-blade and four-blade propellers follows the same laws as with two-blade propellers, and that all conclusions reached from Dr. Durand's tests can be upheld.

Atomization of Liquid Fuels Part 1: Relation Between Atomization and Combustion, Methods Employed for Determining the Size of Particles and Small Drops, Choice of Experimental Method

Description: In the present treatise we will consider chiefly the problem of solid injection in comparison with air injection. On leaving the valve or nozzle through one or more small openings, the fuel is split up into innumerable fine drops, which penetrate the combustion chamber in divergent directions in the form of a conical jet. The efficiency of this jet is judged from the following three viewpoints: 1) with respect to the fineness of atomization; 2) with respect to the direction or distribution of s… more

Atomization of Liquid Fuels Part 2: Description of Apparatus, Fuels Tested, Atomization Experiments, Discharge Measurements, Atomization

Description: This report describes the design and operation of a nozzle to inject fuel into an engine. The design of the nozzle is open, without any compulsory or automatic stop-valve. The fuel injection is regulated simply by the pressure and the adjustment of the fuel pump.

Aviation Spirit - Past, Present, and Future

Description: The volatile fuel of the high-speed internal combustion engine has, in the past, consisted almost exclusively of the lighter distillates from crude petroleum. Alternative and supplementary fuels are discussed such as: tetraline, dekalin, alcohol, cyclo-hexenes.

The C.A.M.S. 54 G.R. Transatlantic Seaplane (French)

Description: Tested at the end of March, 1928, the C.A.M.S. 54 G.R. was built for the purpose of crossing the Atlantic from Europe by way of the azores. It has a biplane construction with wings mounted above the hull. It is powered by two new series 500 HP. geared Hispano Suiza V type engines.

Change Houses in the Lake Superior Region

Description: Technical paper issued by the Bureau of Mines over change and wash houses in the Lake Superior area. As stated in the introduction, "this paper, with a few exceptions, presents data acquired in a survey, made by the author, of change houses in the Lake Superior region. All buildings, equipment, and practices were studied with regard for the health and welfare of the miner" (p. 1). This paper includes tables, photographs, and illustrations.

Considerations on Propeller Efficiency

Description: The propeller cannot be considered alone, but the mutual interference between propeller and airplane must be considered. These difficulties are so great when the joint action of propeller and airplane is considered, that the aerodynamic laboratory at Gottingen originally abandoned the idea of applying the efficiency conception of the test results. These difficulties and the methods by which they are overcome are outlined in this report.

Control of Airplanes at Low Speeds

Description: Loss of control over the orientation of an airplane as the incidence approaches and enters the region of stalled flight is a prolific cause of serious accidents. This report discusses methods of landing at slow speeds approaching stall.
