A 2-MeV microwave thermionic gun

Description: A high-gradient, S-band microwave gun with a thermionic cathode is being developed in a collaborative effort by AET, Varian, and SSRL. A prototype design using an upgraded Varian dispenser cathode mounted with thermal isolation directly in the first half-cell of a 1-1/2 cell, side-coupled, standing-wave cavity has been fabricated and is being tested. 6. 4 tesla dipole magnet for the SSC. Revision

Description: A design is presented for a dipole magnet suitable for the proposed SSC facility. Test results are given for model magnets of this design 1 m long and 4.5 m long. Flattened wedge-shaped cables (''keystoned'') are used in a graded, two-layer ''cos theta'' configuration with three wedges to provide sufficient field uniformity and mechanical rigidity. S-11 and S-20 photocathode research activity. Rev. 1

Description: The S-1 semi-transparent photocathode is the only one that can be used to study the 1.06 ..mu..m neodynium laser pulses of less than 10 ps duration. We first reviewed the recent results obtained at the Paris Observatory (research sponsored by the CEA), and then we tried to determine the role of the main constituents and their contributions in photoemission.

Description: We present an O(18) theory which is pertubatively unifiable and which accounts for the absence of right-handed families in the low-energy world. The model gives rise to dramatic predictions for proton decay and for the Z/sup 0/ width.

20 TeV collider lattices with low-. beta. insertions

Description: A lattice containing insertions designed for collisions of 20 TeV proton beams at crossing points having beta values of two meters or less is presented. The machine would use high-field double bore superconducting magnets, with opposite focusing action on the two beams passing through each quadrupole. Hence the focusing pattern in the insertions is antisymmetric about the crossings. 344 cm x 86 cm low mass vacuum window

Description: The LBL Heavy Ion Spectrometer System (HISS) superconducting magnet contains a 1 m x 3.45 m x 2 m vacuum tank in its gap. A full aperture thin window was needed to minimize background as the products of nuclear collisions move from upstream targets to downstream detectors. Absolute dipole gamma-ray strength functions for /sup 176/Lu

Description: We have derived absolute dipole strength-function information for /sup 176/Lu from an average resonance capture study of /sup 175/Lu with 2-keV neutrons, and from neutron capture cross-section measurements with neutrons from 30 keV to about 1 MeV. We found that we needed to increase our previous estimate of the relative M1/E1 strengths near 5 MeV by a factor of 3, and to revise downward the absolute magnitude of our E1 strength function. Acceleration of compact toroid plasma rings for fusion applications

Description: We describe experimental results for a new type of collective accelerator based on magnetically confined compact torus (CT) plasma rings and discuss applications to both inertial and magnetic fusion. We have demonstrated the principle of CT acceleration in the RACE device with acceleration of 0.5 mg ring masses to 400 km/s and 0.02 mg ring masses to 1400 km/s at greater than or equal to30% efficiency.
