The Activity Coefficients of Hydrochloric Acid and Sodium Chloride in Hydrochloric Acid-Sodium Chloride Mixtures

Description: The activity coefficients of HCl and NaCl in HCl--NaCl mixtures were computed from literature data. The calculations are based on the observation that at constant ionic strength and temperature the logarithm of the activity coefficient of HCi in HCl--NaCl mixtures varies linearly with NaCl concentration. Aeroradioactivity Survey and Areal Geology of Parts of Southeastern New York and Southern New England (ARMS-I)

Description: Report concerning "[a]n airborne gamma-radiation survey of Connecticut, Rhode Island, and parts of New York, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Vermont" (p. 5) made between 1958 and 1960 that indicated that a broad range of radioactivity exists in those areas depending on the type of bedrock. Correlations are drawn between this radioactivity and the geology of the region.

An Annotated Bibliography on the Effects of Radiation on Heterogeneously Catalyzed Reactions and on Chemisorption

Description: The 264 references were compiled primarily from a search of Chemical Abstracts, Nuclear Science Abstracts, and Dissertation Abstracts through December 1962. The annotations give the type of radiation, the catalysts investigated, and the test reactions used. The entries are cross-referenced, and indexes of the authors, catalysts, reactions, and type of radiation are provided. The compliation is limited to papers in which either heterogeneously catalyzed reactions, chemisorption, or the radiolysi… more

Army Gas-Cooled Reactor Systems Program. Initial Full Power and Limited Endurance Tests of the ML-1 Nuclear Power Plant. Final Test Report

Description: The evaluation of the data generated during the full power and limited endurance tests of the ML-1 mobile nuclear power plant indicates that the reactor performs in accordance with the design specifications. During the 101 hr test period, the reactor attained a maximum power of 3.44 Mw( and 247 kw(e) was measured at the output shaft of the turbine-compressor set. No operating limits were exceeded during these tests and all systems performed satisfactorily Except for the known performance defici… more

Calculations on close-coupled processing for Pu-238 recovery

Description: Irradiation of Np-237 in Hanford reactors and recovery of the Pu-238 product in a close-coupled separations plant is currently of interest. Such a concept has the potential of increasing in Pu-238 production rates. The results of initial calculations on the subject are presented herein to aid further study and evaluation. Much of the information is presented in terms of the aqueous target system proposed in earlier work (i.e., irradiation and processing of an aqueous neptunium solution). Howeve… more

Construction of an Extended Nuclidic Mass Table

Description: A parabolic systematics approach was used to construct an extended mass table with very small deviations between the calculated and known masses. The masses were obtained from a formula parabolic in 2 after inclusion of the necessary considerations. For 763 masses, the standard deviation was 0.35 Mev, and the largest deviation was 2 Mev. CORRELATION EFFECTS IN MANY FERMION SYSTEMS: MULTIPLE PARTICLE EXCITATION EXPANSION

Description: The ground-state wave function and energy of a finite system of interacting fermions are expanded in terms of multiple-particle excitations on an uncorrelated zero-order state. The resulting set of coupled equations constitutes a systematic variational generalization of Hartree-Fock theory. Comparison is made with many-body perturbation theory and it is shown that to any order the theory incorporates an infinite number of perturbation theory terms. Solutions of the equations for ground-state at… more

THE DEPTH-DOSE DISTRIBUTION PRODUCED IN A SPHERICAL WATER-FILLED PHANTOM BY THE INTERACTIONS OF A 160-Mev PROTON BEAM

Description: Measurements were made of the total energy deposited at various points within a 42-cm-dia spherical water-filled lucite phantom by the secondary particles resulting from 160-Mev proton reactions with various targets. Target materials were water, aluminum, carbon, copper, and bismuth. Detectors were small lucite-walled ionization chambers filled with 97% A--3% CO/sub 2/ or ethylene gas. Data were taken both with the lucite phantom on the beam axis and with the phantom offset approximately 54 deg… more

Development of Pulsed Neutron Application to Power Reactor Start-Up Procedures. Fifth Quarterly Progress Report, April 1-June 30, 1963

Description: Activities in a program to develop techniques in the use of pulsed neutron sources to measure shutdown parameters related to large thermal power reactors are reported. The development of pulsed neutron source techniques for large power reactors has led to a new theoretical model recently developed by E. Garelis and J.L. Russell, Jr. The theory is presently based on a bare, one-group model with m-delayed precursors and takes all spatial modes into account. Results indicate, however, that the app… more

Development Test IP-556-D, supplement A, irradiation service request HAPO-278 outgassing rate of tritium at high temperature

Description: The nuclear heat generation rate in the first capsule irradiated was higher by a factor of two than was calculated. The original capsule was irradiated in a dry bore with cooling water in the annulus only. The new capsule will be irradiated in a water-cooled bore facility with additional cooling coils around the lithium containing tube. This will keep the inner capsule temperature below 150 C during the initial tritium buildup period prior to outgassing. This Supplement authorizes the irradiati… more
