Description: Beams of metallic ion species can be produced by the ECR (electron cyclotron resonance) ion source and by the MEVVA (metal vapor vacuum arc) ion source. Although the ECR source is fundamentally a gaseous ion source, metal ion beams can be produced by introducing metallic feed material into the plasma discharge using a number of techniques. Algorithms for the self-consistent simulation of high power klystrons

Description: We discuss an improvement to the algorithm developed by Yu for modelling rf cavities in klystrons using the port approximation. In this method, the cavity is simulated by imposing an rf voltage as a boundary condition across the outer wall. B Meson Reconstruction and Lifetime Studies With the Mark II at PEP

Description: We have measured the lifetime of an ensemble of particles containing b quarks, tagged with a high p/sub T/ lepton from their semileptonic decay. Using a method which estimates the production point of each particle in the beam ellipse, we measured a lifetime of 0.98 +- 0.12 +- 0.13 psec. We have also studied methods of partially reconstructing B mesons decaying into D/sup/star//minus// mesons plus charged leptons or mesons. Background radiation from fission pulses

Description: Extensive source terms for beta, gamma, and neutrons following fission pulses are presented in various tabular and graphical forms. Neutron results from a wide range of fissioning nuclides (42) are examined and detailed information is provided for four fuels: /sup 235/U, /sup 238/U, /sup 232/Th, and /sup 239/Pu; these bracket the range of the delayed spectra. Beam impedances of position monitors, bellows, and abort kicker

Description: The miscellaneous components of an accelerator may contribute a substantial or even dominant part of the interaction between beam and surroundings. We have estimated the beam impedances of a few of these components. Book preservation technologies

Description: This assessment analyzes the problem of acid deterioration of books and the program underway at the Library of Congress. The program at the Library involves the chemical treatment of books in a unique and effective process that, however, also presents some new engineering and safety concerns. Bootstrap currents in radio-frequency-driven tokamak equilibria

Description: Interest in the bootstrap current arising from neoclassical transport in tokamaks has increased recently in view of certain experimental observations. Braze alloy development for zircaloy

Description: The purpose of this study was to find a suitable braze alloy to close the ends of a new fuel design for N Reactor, the defense reactor at the Hanford site, Washington. An alloy composed of Zircaloy-2 + 8 wt % chromium + 8 wt % nickel (Zr2-8Cr-8Ni) was successfully used to obtain an acceptable joint with no voids. Suggestions for future work on end closure development for the new fuel are outlined. This alloy has potential use in any Zircaloy joining applications. 3 refs., 9 figs., 3 tabs.

Bunch length and impedance measurements in SPEAR

Description: Subsequent to an extensive smoothing of the vacuum chamber a comprehensive study of the SPEAR impedance was undertaken. Bunch length, synchrotron quadrupole mode frequency, and parasitic mode loss were measured as functions of beam current. The calculated longitudinal impedance of the SLC (Stanford Linear Collider) damping rings

Description: A high level of current dependent bunch lengthening has been observed in the north damping ring of the Stanford Linear Collider (SLC), indicating that the ring's impedance is very inductive. Calculation of higher order modes in the RHIC 27 MHz rf cavity

Description: The URMEL code was used to calculate the frequencies, quality factors, and shunt impedances of the lowest modes of the proposed RHIC accelerating cavity. These values can be used as input for the calculation of the longitudinal and transverse coupled-bunch instabilities. The cavity dimensions were taken from the RHIC conceptual design report.

Calculation of oxygen diffusion in plutonium oxide films during the high-temperature oxidation of plutonium-1 weight percent gallium in 500 torr of air

Description: Oxygen self-diffusion in PuO/sub 1.995/ was calculated from rate constants obtained for the parabolic oxidation of the Pu-1 wt % Ga alloy in 500-torr dry air between 250 and 480/degree/C. The activation energy for oxygen vacancy diffusion in the n-type PuO/sub 2-x/ is 22.6 kcal/mole. Results from this investigation are compared with other reported results, and possible explanation for the difference in results is discussed. 21 refs., 5 figs., 1 tab.
