Analysis of Extended Zero Power Experiments on the Army Package Power Reactor : ZPE-2

Description: Introduction: This report is principally concerned with analysis of measurements taken on the APPR-1 core during the course of the extended Zero Power Experiments (ZPE-2). The bulk of these measurements are reported in APAE No. 21. There are some additional measurements reported in APAE Memo 115. In addition to the analysis of the ZPE-2 data some re-evaluation has been made of a few of the results obtained from the first set of Zero Power Experiments (ZPE-1). The ZPE-1 measurements are repor… more

AN ANALYSIS OF THE MAGNESIUM-CO$sub 2$ REACTIONS IN TERMS OF A REACTOR ENVIRONMENT

Description: The hazards associnted with the use of magnesium capsules in a CO/sub 2/- cooled reactor system have been analyzed, and consideration has been given to incidents which could lead to excessive temperature excursions and factors which could significantly reduce the ignition temperature of magnesium alloys. Methods of reducing the hazards associated with the Calder Hall type of reactor are discussed, and an experimental approach with which to define more aaccurately conditions that would lead to i… more

Annealing of Irradiated Boron Containing Alloys and Dispersions

Description: The interpretation of the dimensional instability of U- Zr alloy containing small amounts of boron has raised the question of whether the observed low-temperature swelling can be related to the temperatureswelling characteristics of either the U-Zr alloy or Zr- B alloys by themselves. To obtain such information on the Zr--B system to compare with the more detailed study of thc alloy early results of which were reported in KAPL-1562, pieces of previously irradiated Zr- B alloys and dispersions w… more

An approximate analytical method for studying entry into planetary atmospheres

Description: Report presenting a single, ordinary, nonlinear differential equation of second order that can be used for determining entry into an exponential planetary atmosphere. The reduced equation includes various terms, some of which represent the gravity force, the centrifugal acceleration, and the lift force. A number of solutions for lifting and nonlifting vehicles entering at various initial angles are obtained from the complete nonlinear equation.

Area-Suction Boundary-Layer Control as Applied to the Trailing-Edge Flaps of a 35 Degree Swept-Wing Airplane

Description: "A wind-tunnel investigation was made to determine the effects on the aerodynamic characteristics of a 35 degree swept-wing airplane of applying area-suction boundary-layer control to the trailing-edge flaps. Flight tests of a similar airplane were then conducted to determine the effect of boundary-layer control in the handling qualities and operation of the airplane, particularly during landing. The wind-tunnel and flight tests indicated that area suction applied to the trailing-edge flaps pro… more

BEVATRON OPERATION AND DEVELOPMENT. XVI. Period Covered November, December 1957, January 1958

Description: The study of interactions and decay of K mesons continued, using the 10- inch liquid hydrogen bubble chamber and emulsions. Four emulsion stacks were exposed for two internal groups and twenty-three stacks were exposed for seventeen groups from outside the Laboratory. Interactions of pi /sup -/ mesons were observed with a 30-inch propane bubble chamber and with emulsions. Ten emulsion stacks were exposed to neutral-particle beams and one stack to the internal 6.2-Bev proton beam. The 30-inch pr… more

Chemical Processing Department monthly report for April 1958

Description: The separations plants operated on schedule, and Pu production exceeded commitment. UO{sub 3} production and shipments were also ahead of schedule. Purex operation under pseudo two-cycle conditions (elimination of HS and 1A columns, co-decontamination cycle concentrator HCP) was successful. Final U stream was 3{times} lower in Pu than ever before; {gamma} activity in recovered HNO{sub 3} was also low. Four of 6 special E metal batches were processed through Redox and analyzed. Boric acid is rem… more

Conversion of a ``K`` Reactor to single-purpose power recovery: Feasibility study

Description: Somewhere in the future lies the possibility that the existing HAPO reactors will no longer be required for the production of weapons grade plutonium. This could come about either through advances in technology or through changes in the requirements for this particular fissionable isotope as a weapons material. In any event, should these reactors no longer be utilized for plutonium production, it would be appropriate to consider the possibility of their conversion to other uses, notably that of… more
