1/N

Description: There exist families of field theories with symmetry group SO(N) (or SU(N)) that become simpler as N becomes larger. More precisely, the solutions to these theories possess an expansion in powers of 1/N. This expansion is the subject of these lectures. The 1/N expansion can be used to analyze model field theories. The 1/N expansion is developed for phi/sup 4/ theory and applied to two two-dimensional models with similar combinatoric structures, the Gross-Neveu model and the CP/sup N-1/ model. T… more

4. pi. physics. [/sup 40/Ar + KCl, 0. 4 to 1. 8 GeV/A]

Description: Exclusive ..pi../sup -/ and charged-particle production in collisions of /sup 40/Ar on KCl are studied at incident energies from 0.4 to 1.8 GeV/A. The correlation between the ..pi../sup -/ and the total charged particle multiplicity confines the reaction along a narrow ridge with no exotic islands of pion production. For high multiplicities the system reaches the total disintegration of target and projectile into singly charged fragments and pions. Every 200 MeV/A datum was taken with a central… more

ACCEPT: a three-dimensional finite element program for large deformation elastic-plastic-creep analysis of pressurized tubes

Description: ACCEPT is a three-dimensional finite element computer program for analysis of large-deformation elastic-plastic-creep response of Zircaloy tubes subjected to temperature, surface pressures, and axial force. A twenty-mode, tri-quadratic, isoparametric element is used along with a Zircaloy materials model. A linear time-incremental procedure with residual force correction is used to solve for the time-dependent response. The program features an algorithm which automatically chooses the time step … more

Accurate Computer Simulation of a Drift Chamber

Description: A general purpose program for drift chamber studies is described. First the capacitance matrix is calculated using a Green's function technique. The matrix is used in a linear-least-squares fit to choose optimal operating voltages. Next the electric field is computed, and given knowledge of gas parameters and magnetic field environment, a family of electron trajectories is determined. These are finally used to make drift distance vs time curves which may be used directly by a track reconstructi… more

Accurate Numerical Solutions for Elastic-Plastic Models

Description: The accuracy of two integration algorithms is studied for the common engineering condition of a von Mises, isotropic hardening model under plane stress. Errors in stress predictions for given total strain increments are expressed with contour plots of two parameters: an angle in the pi plane and the difference between the exact and computed yield-surface radii.

Acoustic emission signature analysis. Technical progress report No. 2, 1 March 1979-29 February 1980

Description: Acoustic emission in plate glass and steel has been studied as a function of angle. The low frequency AE in glass (< 1 MHz) was studied in detail, and contributions from P, S and Rayleigh waves identified. These results are isotropic, as expected theoretically. Limited high frequency (5-20 MHz) results have been obtained in glass. This is the first time, that AE energy has been measured above 3 MHz. The measurement of AE on transgranular crack growth in steel during fatigue crack growth was acc… more

Actinide partitioning-transmutation program final report. VI. Short-term risk analysis of reprocessing, refabrication, and transportation: summary

Description: A Partitioning-Transmutation (PT) fuel cycle is being compared to a Reference cycle employing conventional fuel-material recovery methods. The PT cycle uses enhanced recovery methods so that most of the long-lived actinides are recycled to nuclear power plants and transmuted thereby reducing the waste toxicity. This report compares the two fuel cycles on the basis of the short-term radiological and nonradiological risks. The accidental radiological risk to the public is analyzed by estimating t… more

Adaptive control for energy conservation

Description: The objective of this project is to investigate the use of adaptive control concepts in buildings with solar-assisted heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems to maintain occupant comfort conditions while minimizing auxiliary energy use. Accomplishing this objective requires an energy management system capable of making sound tradeoffs. Optimal control theory is used along with a system identification technique to provide an adaptable stratgy. The resulting overall approach is … more

Adherence of Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ to CoCrAl coatings. [1000-1200/sup 0/C]

Description: Adhesion between surface scale and protective coating is an essential requirement of a material possessing good overall oxidation resistance. Poor adhesion can lead to exfoliation of the oxide in response to thermal cycling, or mechanically applied stresses, resulting in enhanced oxidation rates. Marked improvements in scale/substrate adhesion can be obtained via the formation of protrusions of oxide growing into the substrate. These act to key the protective scale to the surface and are more e… more
