Alternating Direction and Semi-Explicit Difference Methods for Parabolic Partial Differential Equations

Description: "The energy method is applied to study the stability of two types of difference approximations to parabolic partial differential equations, the alternating direction methods Douglas, Peaceman, and Rachford, and a new semi- explicit method. Each difference scheme is proved to be unconditionally stable. These results apply to parabolic equations with variable coefficients, defined in cylindrical domains with an essentially arbitrary bounded base."

Analog to digital converter system for temperature monitoring -- B, C, D, DR, F, and H reactors

Description: This document discusses a proposal that certain presently installed reactor process water outlet temperature data logging equipment in subject reactors to be replaced with new functionally simplified equipment of a more adequate design. The primary purpose of the proposed installation is to replace existing equipment which is obsolete and in three reactors is worn out to the point where the equipment is out of service frequently for periods of time up to 8 hours or more. The new equipment will … more

Calculation of Doppler Coefficient and Other Safety Parameters for a Large Fast Oxide Reactor

Description: Several safety parameters are calculated for a large, fast, Na-cooled, oxide-fueled reactor. The Doppler coefficient is studied as regards its effect on the reactivity during a power excursion, and its dependence on the neutron spectrum, on the concentrations of U/sup 238/, Pu /sup 239/ , a nd Pu/sup 240/, on spatial temperature and power distributions, and on temperature. Other parameters studied include the Na temperature coefficient of reactivity, and the reactivity insertion caused by total… more

Chemical Development Section C Progress Report for October-November 1960

Description: Studies are being made on the recovery of thorium (and uranium) from granitic rock, since this source represents a very large potential thorium reserve for the nuclear power industry. In preliminary leaching studies on 16 granite samples (containing 8-95 ppm thorium and 1.5-16 ppm uranium), maximum recoveries of thorium and uranium ranged 30-85% and 15-65% respectively, and sulfuric acid consumption was high (30-120 lbs H2SO4 per ton of granite). A relatively high acidity was needed to obtain r… more

CHEMICAL ENGINEERING DIVISION SUMMARY REPORT, OCTOBER, NOVEMBER, DECEMBER 1960

Description: Chemical-metallurgical processing studies were made of pyrometallurgical development snd research, and fuel processing facilities for EBR-II. Fuel-cycle applications of fluidization and volatility techniques included laboratory investigations of fluoride volatility processes, engineeringscale development, and conversion of UF/sub 6/ to UO/sub 2/. Reactor safety studies consisted of metal oxidation and ignition kinetics, and metal-water reactions. Reactor chemistry investigations were conducted … more

The Cold Pressing of Sinterable UO₂

Description: The intent of this work was to explore more fully the pressing of sinterable UO2 powders into cylindrical compacts in the hope that a more precise prediction of green density in terms of powder properties, pressure, and geometry could be evolved.

Conceptual Design of a Coupled Breeding Superheating Reactor, CBSR

Description: The conceptual design of the Coupled Breeding Superheating Reactor, CBSR, for achieving a positive breeding gain and for producing 65 Mw of electric power is presented. The design combines a steam-cooled fast region and a nonboiling pressurized light-water-cooled thermal region. The advantage offered by this arrangement as compared with that using a solid moderator in the thermal zone is that, if a power excursion occurs, the water will increase the void content and tend to limit the excursion.… more

Containment in Cusped Plasma Systems

Description: "A survey of the current theoretical picture of plasma containment in cusped magnetic configurations is presented together with a mention of the points of contact which exist or might soon be made to exist with experiment. A theory of containment was developed which is applicable to the whole range of plasma densities from a tenuous plasma in an essentially vacuum magnetic field to a fully developed plasma which completely excludes the magnetic field from its interior. Also presented are cursor… more

Contribution of Neutral Pions to Photon-Proton Scattering

Description: "The correction to photon-photon scattering processes due to the existence of the particles other than electrons is reported. The correction is of the same order in the electric charge as the lowest order term in the perturbation expansion in quantum electrodynamics, although the relevant corrections to the electron-photon and electron-electron scattering are all of higher order."

DAMAGE TO CONVENTIONAL AND SPECIAL TYPES OF RESIDENCES EXPOSED TO NUCLEAR EFFECTS

Description: Ten residential structures of wood, brick, lightweight reinforced concrete block, and lightweight precast concrete slabs were exposed in pairs to the effects of a nuclear device of approximately 30 kt yield, detonated atop a 500-ft tower. The houses represented various structural types, and two houses of each type were tested. One house was located at an anticipated overpressure at which collapse or major damage might be expected and the other was located at an anticipated overpressure at which… more
