Aquatic Biology in Nederlo Creek, Southwestern Wisconsin

Description: From abstract: This report presents the results of biologic investigations by the U.S. Geological Survey and the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources during a study of hydrology and water quality in a small drainage basin in the "Driftless Area" of southwest Wisconsin. The investigation included aquatic macrophytes, periphytic and planktonic algae, benthic invertebrates, and trout population dynamics during 1967-78.

Effects of a Floodwater-Retarding Structure on the Hydrology and Ecology of Trout Creek in Southwestern Wisconsin

Description: Abstract: The primary effect of a floodwater-retarding structure (FRS) on the flow of Trout Creek, Wisconsin, is attenuation of flood peaks. Reduction of flood peaks ranged from 58 to 91 percent during the study period, 1975 to 1979. An inverse relationship exists between sediment concentration and outflow from the FRS during floods. Description: From introduction: This study was begun in 1967 in cooperation with the Wisconsin Department of natural Resources (DNR)--its purpose was to evaluate the effects of construction of a reservoir and a floodwater-retention structure on the hydrologic system and water quality in a small basin in southwestern Wisconsin. In 1968, Federal research funds were obtained to provide for more detailed study of water quality and to extend the scope of the study to include aquatic biota.

Measurement and Prediction of Sediment Yields in Wisconsin Streams

Description: From introduction: This report presents practical and useful sediment-yield information for Wisconsin. Measured and estimated sediment yields are supplemented by information on suspended-sediment concentration and particle size of suspended and bed material for 84 sites in the State. To expand the usefulness of these data, an additional section in the report presents a method to estimate or predict sediment yields in ungaged streams.

Description: From abstract: This report presents estimated annual and monthly water budgets for lake Wingra and the adjacent wetland area for January 1972 through September 1977. Annually, inputs from precipitation, surface runoff, and ground-water inflow are approximately equal (31, 34, and 35 percent, respectively). Outputs include outflow from the lake into Murphy Creek (70 percent), evotranspiration from the lake and wetland (26 percent), and ground-water outflow (4 percent).

Plan of Study for the Northern Midwest Regional Aquifer-System Analysis

Description: From abstract: Sedimentary rocks of Cambrian and Ordovician age form a major aquifer system in most of Wisconsin and Iowa, northern Illinois, northwestern Indiana, southeastern Minnesota, and northern Missouri. Many metropolitan areas depend on the aquifer for all or part of their water supplies. Declines in potentiometric head have been large in the most heavily pumped areas, most notably Chicago, Milwaukee-Waukesha, Minneapolis-St. Paul, and Des Moines.
