1706-KER Coolant Test Facility Operations Manual

Description: This procedure is intended to be used as: 1. An instruction and guide for operation of the KER loops. 2. To aid in familiarization and understanding of the general operation of the loops. 3. To prevent lost time due to errors in loop operation. The procedure is not meant to be completely comprehensive in all details of loop operation.

Accelerator Development Department Internal Report

Description: In this report we present solutions of the design problem in which a system of quadruple lenses is required to carry a particle beam from given focal lines in the x and y planes to other given focal lines. Particular attention will be given to the case of the anastigmatic lens system which takes a beam from one focal point to another focal point. Since the general problem is almost impossibly complicated a simplification is introduced by breaking the lens system into two parts. The first part o… more

Air Scattering of Co60 Gamma Rays: Theory Versus Experiment

Description: For Co60 source at 15 meters, the air-scattered gamma dose rate predicted by theory is excerpted from ORNL-1575, pp. 167-203. This is compared with experimental measurements for the same source and comparable geometry reported by Convair in CVAC-170T. After applying an appropriate correction for ground scattering as estimated in Mart-55-16T (Convair), the two results are found to be in substantial agreement.

Airborne Radioactivity Surveys in Geologic Exploration

Description: The following report describes the use of airborne radioactivity surveying and analytical techniques in geologic exploration by examples of the analysis or evaluation of airborne data related to specific geologic settings. The airborne radioactivity surveying program was begun in 1949 by the U.S. Geological Survey to assist in uranium exploration.

Airborne Reconnaissance Project, Ruby Range and Sweetwater Basin, Montana

Description: Abstract: A low-level airborne radioactivity survey of parts of Beaverhead and Madison Counties in southwestern Montana was undertaken from June 6 to October 14, 1955. Flying centered around the Ruby Range-Sweetwater Basin area and concentrated on the Precambrian metamorphic complex and Tertiary lake-bed sediments. No commercial uranium deposits were discovered, and no extensions were found of the few known small occurrences. Five areas of high background detected through the survey were invest… more

Analyses of Washington Coals: Supplement to Technical Papers 491 and 618

Description: From Washington Coalfields: The geographical distribution of the principal coal areas of Washington is shown in figure 1. Detailed information concerning these fields is given in Bureau of Mines Technical Paper 491. Further information on the minor coal areas is given in two bulletins of the Washington Division of Mines and Geology. Analyses, plastic properties, free-swelling indexes, and agglutinating values of the separate coals, together with data on yields of carbonization products and prop… more

An Analysis of Ramjet Engines Using Supersonic Combustion

Description: From Introduction: "The concept of supersonic combustion is by no means new, although little work appears to have been published on the subject. For example, an analysis of supersonic combustion to provide lift under a wing is given in reference 1. Reference 2 discusses applications to hypersonic ramjets being studied at the University of Michigan."

Analysis of Spurious Modes in Magnet Power Supply

Description: "The resonant frequencies of the magnet power supply are investigated. It is found that there are eleven resonant modes in addition to the desired mode of operation with six additional resonant frequencies. From measurements of the choke model, it appears that the frequencies of some of the spurious modes may lie in the same range as the desired mode of operation."

Annotated Bibliography of Salt Deposits: A Supplement to U.S. Geological Survey Bulletin 1019-J

Description: Abstract: "This bibliography supplements the information on salt published in U.S. Geological Survey Bulletin 1019-J, "Annotated Bibliography and Index Map of Salt Deposits in the United States," by Walter B. Lang, 1957. The supplement contains additional information on the salt deposits of the United States and of foreign countries, as well as data on the composition, chemistry, geologic occurrences, geophysical exploration, distribution, technology, and production of salt. Additional suppleme… more

Army Airfield Pavement Evaluation, Report 4: Simmons Army Airfield, Fort Bragg, North Carolina

Description: "This report describes studies and analyses made to determine the load-carrying capacities of the pavements at Simmons Army Airfield with respect to various aircraft landing gear assemblies and pavement life categories. The report includes data obtained from design specifications, in-place and laboratory tests performed during construction of the pavements, and in-place and laboratory tests performed for evaluation purposes" (p. 1).

Betatron Oscillations and Equilibrium Orbits in Terms of Amplitude and Phase Functions

Description: "Formulas are given to express the general particle trajectory and the equilibrium orbit for a slightly disturbed synchrotron in terms of the amplitude and phase functions for the ideal machine. If these functions are known, orbit computations can be carried out by simple integration procedures. The formalism is expected to be useful especially for considerations such as beam alignment or generation of an external electron beam. Some equations given earlier are repeated for completeness."
