ADVANCED PRESSURE VESSEL MATERIALS.

Description: Data on 5Cr - 3Mo - 12Ni alloy, PH13 - 8Mo and Iconel 718 for pressure vessel application are given. The 5Cr - 3Mo - 12Ni posseses characteristics suited to uniform aging of heavy sections. Tensile and toughness properties are good, and structural stability up to 315 deg C is adequate. Weldability with 12Ni - 3Cr - 3Mo filler material is good but 12Ni - 5Cr - 3Mo filler is more efficient. Aging characteristics of PH13 - 8Mo may not be suited to uniform aging of heavy sections. Excellent tensile… more

AXO detonator. Quarterly report, June--August, 1969

Description: A factorial spark gap detonator study is presented, with the results. UK PETN, (MF 81/10, 6,200 cm{sup 2}/g) at 1.12 g/cm{sup 3} had a higher voltage breakdown and a higher power deposition than others in the test. A somewhat unusual firing system employed for these tests is described. The purpose of the experiment was for determining the effect of specific surface areas (or particle sizes), density, and energy input (including rate of energy input) upon various dependent variables.

D.C. Arc Excitation of Impurities in Plutonium Dioxide Using Carrier Distillation Techniques.

Description: The effect of various carrier compounds and methods of preparation of plutonium dioxide upon the spectral emission of trace metallic impurities have been studied. By using an emission spectrometer, equipped with a chart readout, excitation rates have been established for elements analyzed by the carrier distillation technique. This study has shown that the use of 8.3% AgCl-LiF (11:1) in plutonium dioxide gives the most sensitive and reproducable excitation for the majority of impurity elements.… more

HE calorimetry. Quarterly report, April--June, 1969

Description: The 48-inch detonation sphere confined the gaseous products resulting from the discharge of approximately one-half pound (225 g) of an HE (PETN) under investigation. Product analysis, combined with calorimetric measurements will provide data regarding the detonation processes. Results of the initial HE detonation are still in the process of evaluation and tabulation. The final summary of this information will be instrumental in the direction of future experimental endeavor. Investigation at Pan… more

Columbia River Thermal Effects Study. Quarterly progress report, January--March 1969

Description: The Columbia River Thermal Effects Study is an interagency study being carried out jointly by the Atomic Energy Commission, the Federal Water Pollution Control Administration, and the Bureau of Commercial Fisheries. Leadership for the study as a whole has been assigned to the Northwest Region of the FWPCA. By agreement among the participating agencies, a brief progress report on each project of the study is to be provided each quarter to the FWPCA on a standardized format. The FWPCA consolidate… more
