Constant chemical addition to reduction operation in the 234-5 Building

Description: At the request of the ``S`` Division, a study has been made regarding the feasibility of simplifying operations by standardizing the amounts of chemical additions made at the reduction step as is the current practice in the purification operation. The investigation included a study of the following items, which are discussed under separate headings: (1) variation in feed; (2) maximum variation in booster ratios and per cent excess calcium using the method; and (3) chemicals handling and storage… more

Control Performance of General Electric Fuel and Torque Regulator Operating on T31-3 Turbine-Propeller Engine in Sea-Level Test Stand

Description: "A General Electric fuel and torque regulator was tested in conjunction with a T31-3 turbine-propeller engine in the sea-level static test stand at the NACA Lewis laboratory. The engine and control were operated over the entire speed range: 11,000 rpm, nominal flight idle, to 13,000 rpm, full power. Steady-state and transient data were recorded and are presented with a description of the four control loops being used in the system" (p. 1).

Criticality Calculations for Hydrogen Moderated Reactors From Microscopic Data

Description: From abstract: "The probability for a fission neutron to escape fast leakage from bare, hydrogen moderated reactors is calculated by a method utilizing only the microscopic cross section of the materials. These results can be employed to determine the effectiveness of other substances in preventing fast neutron leakage. These calculations are carried out for aluminum and iron."

Experimental investigation of base pressure on blunt-trailing-edge wings at supersonic velocities

Description: From Summary: "Measurements of base pressure are presented for 29 blunt-trailing-edge wings having an aspect ratio of 3.0 and various airfoil profiles. The different profiles comprised thickness ratios between 0.05 and 0.10, boattail angles between -2.9 degrees and 20 degrees, and ratios of trailing-edge thickness to airfoil thickness between 0.2 and 1.0. The tests were conducted at Mach numbers of 1.25, 1.5, 2.0, and 3.1. For each Mach number, the Reynolds number and angle of attack were varie… more

Filter capacity tests

Description: Increases in production rates in the 100 Areas have caused a demand for additional amounts of cooling water for process use. Consequently, continual efforts have been made to push the existing filter plants well beyond designed capacity. The latest and most successful effort was made at the 100-B filter plant during the spring of 1951. Tests of the 100-B Area indicate that the 100 Area filters can be operated safety at 3,400 GPM per unit, or 13.3% beyond the designed capacity, during the period… more

Flight Camera for Photographing Cloud Droplets in Natural Suspension in the Atmosphere

Description: "A camera designed for use in flight has been developed by the NACA Lewis laboratory to photograph cloud droplets in their natural suspension in the atmosphere. A magnification of 32 times is employed to distinguish for measurement purposes all sizes of droplets greater than 5 microns in diameter. Photographs can be taken at flight speeds up to 150 miles per hour at 5-second intervals, A field area of 0.025 square inch is photographed on 7-inch-width roll film accommodating 40 exposures on an 1… more

Forced-Convection Heat Transfer to Water at High Pressures and Temperatures in the Nonboiling Region

Description: "Forced-convection heat-transfer data have been obtained for water flowing in an electrically heated tube of circular cross section at water pressures of 200 and 2000 pounds per square inch, and temperatures in the nonboiling region, for water velocities ranging between 5 and 25 feet per second. The results indicate that conventional correlations can be used to predict heat-transfer coefficients for water at pressures up to 2000 pounds per square inch and temperatures in the nonboiling region" … more

G.E. Co. Hanford Works - Project C-431-A production facility - Sec. A, subcontract G-363, revised design report

Description: The 100-C project is to be located adjacent to the present 100-P Area. It is planned to build an addition to the present 181-B River Pump House using the same elevations for pump settings, intakes, and floors as for the present pump house, thus maintaining the same suction conditions and flood protection as B Area. The 105 Building will be located on higher ground than B Area and, therefore, protection against possible flood damage is assured.

Pile Technology Test Report: Flapper Nozzle Assembly

Description: The functional operation of the flapper nozzle was tested by charging slugs through it while water flow rates up to 48.4 gpm and inlet header pressures up to 400 psig. were maintained. Comparative damage to the slugs by the flapper nozzle and an H-type inlet nozzle was determined by charging slugs through the nozzles with a 105-D type air cylinder charging machine under conditions of no water flow or lubrication. The effect of the nozzle design on the inlet pressure fluctuations was determined … more
