AN-102 Simulant Sr/TRU Precipitation and Ultrafiltration

Description: The objective of these tests was to gather data on performance of the single-tube crossflow ultrafilter unit to de-water the simulant precipitate derived from a project approved tank 241-AN-102 simulant. Upon completion of the objectives with the approved R1 simulant, the simulant specification was changed and additional work at modified precipitation conditions was requested.

Abortion: Legislative Response

Description: The primary focus of this issue brief is legislative action in the 108th Congress with respect to abortion. Accelerator related backgrounds in the LHC forward detectors

Description: Detailed Monte Carlo simulations are performed on radiation environment in the LHC IP5 interaction region at the locations of the TOTEM Roman Pots proposed to detect particles produced at very small angles in the elastic scattering and diffraction dissociation processes at the LHC. Radiation loads on these detectors are calculated with the MARS14 code both of the pp-collision origin and beam loss related (beam-gas and tails from collimators).

AIDS in Africa

Description: Sub-Saharan Africa has been far more severely affected by AIDS than any other part of the world. The United Nations reports that 29.4 million adults and children are infected with the HIV virus in the region, which has about 10% of the world's population but more than 70% of the worldwide total of infected people. Alpha-Gallium (010) surface reconstruction: a LEED structural analysis of the (1x1) room temperature and (2rt2xrt2)R45 degrees low temperature structures

Description: The geometric structure of the alpha-Ga(010)-(1x1) room temperature structure and its (2rt2xrt2) R45 degrees reconstruction below 232 K have been determined using Low Energy Electron Diffraction (LEED) structure analysis. The room temperature structure conforms to the cut-dimer model, forming a two-dimensional metallic structure with only minimal lateral displacements of the atoms. We demonstrate the translation of a serial program with high-level abstractions to a lower-level parallel program in two separate phases.
