Description: The novel compounds 1-/sup 11/C-D-glucose, 1-/sup 11/C-D-mannose, 1-/sup 11/C-D-galactose, 2-/sup 11/C-D-glucose, 2-/sup 11/C-D-mannose and 2-/sup 11/C-D-galactose which can be used in nuclear medicine to monitor the metabolism of glucose and galactose can be rapidly prepared by reaction of the appropriate aldose substrate with an alkali metal /sup 11/C-labeled cyanide followed by reduction with a Raney alloy in formic acid.

Description: The three D-Zero cryostats (2 EC and 1 CC) will rest on three carriages which in turn ride on a set of hardened ways in the center beam. Acceleration of compact toroid plasma rings for fusion applications

Description: We describe experimental results for a new type of collective accelerator based on magnetically confined compact torus (CT) plasma rings and discuss applications to both inertial and magnetic fusion. We have demonstrated the principle of CT acceleration in the RACE device with acceleration of 0.5 mg ring masses to 400 km/s and 0.02 mg ring masses to 1400 km/s at greater than or equal to30% efficiency. Analysis of organics in 643-G groundwaters by GC/MS

Description: Twenty-three of the 63 monitoring wells in the 643-G burial ground consistently contain measurable (> 1 ppm) amounts of total organic carbon, TOC. Of these 23 wells, 10 that contain elevated (2--400 ppm) TOC were chosen for in-depth analysis of semivolatile organics by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry, GC/MS. Beam-head erosion in a highly conductive background

Description: An analytic estimate of beam heat erosion in a highly conductive background is presented and compared to numerical results. Model equations are derived and forced into a self-similar form from which parameter scalings are easily obtained. It is found that erosion in this limit is driven by scattering and is very rapid for high conductivities (greater than or equal to 10/sup 11/) due to the high fraction of current neutralization.

Beam model for non-planar orbits in synchrotrons

Description: A framework has been developed for a beam model in the case of synchrotron orbits not confined to a plane. An appropriate moving reference system for the analysis of beam stability has been introduced. As examples of strong perturbations to median plane symmetry, two geometries for the overpass for the Tevatron collider are considered.

Characterization of the impurities in tungsten/silicon-germanium contacts

Description: Secondary ion mass spectrometry and Auger electron spectrometry depth profiling were used to determine impurity distributions in sputter deposited tungsten films over N-type and P-type 80/20 silicon-germanium elements of thermoelectric devices. These analyses showed that silicon, oxygen, sodium, boron, and phosphorous were present as impurities in the tungsten film. All these impurities except oxygen and sodium came from the substrate. Chemical-decomposition models for the thermal explosion of confined HMX, TATB, RDX, and TNT explosives

Description: Chemical decomposition models have been deduced from the available chemical kinetic data on the thermal decomposition of HMX, TATB, RDX, and TNT. A thermal conduction model is used in which the thermal conductivity of the reacting explosive decreases linearly with the mass fraction reacted to that of the gaseous products.
