Aerodynamic Loads on Tails at High Angles of Attack and Sideslip

Description: "Results are presented for the loads and moments acting on the individual tail surfaces of a body-tail combination over a wide range of angles of attack and sideslip. The effects of forebody length and panel-panel interference on the characteristics are included. It is shown that large nonlinear variations in these loads and moments, which occur at some combinations of angle of attack and sideslip, cannot be predicted by low-angle theory" (p. 1).

Analysis of efficiency characteristics of a single-stage turbine with downstream stators in terms of work and speed requirements

Description: One-dimensional mean-section flow and blade specific losses proportional to average specific kinetic energy are assumed in the analysis. Range of the work-speed parameter lambda considered includes low to moderate blade speeds with high specific work outputs, where critical turbojet, turbopump, and accessory-drive turbines are encountered. A diffusion factor of 0.5 limits the loading on the downstream stators. Turbine efficiences considered are total or aerodynamic, rating, and static. Efficien… more

Analysis of Wing Loads on a Flexible Swept-Wing Jet Bomber During Push-Pull Maneuvers

Description: Report presenting measurements of the loads of the wing of a Boeing B-47A medium bomber using strain-gage instrumentation during 23 symmetrical push-pull maneuvers at a variety of altitudes, Mach numbers, and gross weights. Time histories of aerodynamic shear, bending moment, and torque at each of four spanwise stations on the left wing and one on the right wing were created. Based on the results, presently available methods seem to be capable of predicting additional and basic loads accurately… more

Drilling in the Flatirons Locality, Monument Valley, Arizona

Description: From introduction: A subsurface exploration program was undertaken to investigate the concentration of uranium and vanadium in or near the base of the Shinarump member of the Chinle formation in the Flatirons locality, and to develop criteria whereby adjacent unexplored areas could be evaluated as to potential production capacity from study of geological and mineralogical features at the host rook outcrop. An earlier study of the area by C. G. Evensen of the U. S. Atomic Energy Commission had s… more

Eddy-Current Measurement of Clad Thickness on Mark X MTR Fuel Plates

Description: At the request of the Alloy Preparation Group, the Nondestructive Test Development Group investigated the feasibility of determining the clad thickness on Mark X MTR Fuel Plates. As the use of induced eddy-currents was considered to be the most promising approach, a prototype instrument and probe coil utilizing this principle was developed to measure clad thickness. The results of the investigation conducted with this instrument indicate that the clad thickness of this type of fuel plats can be… more

EFFECT OF APPR-1 CONTROL ROD ACCELERATION AFTER SCRAM ON STARTUP ACCIDENT

Description: In the preoperational checkout of the APPR-1 it became apparent that the control rod acceleration after scram was lower than expected. It was expected that the control rod acceleration after scram would be 0.750 g(1) where g is the acceleration of gravity. However, measurements made at Ft. Belvoir indicated an acceleration of 0.4 g. The effect of this reduced acceleration on the safety of the APPR1 is reported in this memo. In the operation of the APPR1 the most dangerous condition exists at co… more

Effect of Boundary Solidity of Planing Lift Obtained in a High-Speed Water Jet With a Single Longitudinal Slot in Each Rigid Boundary

Description: Report discussing the hydrodynamic planing-lift forces of a model of a rectangular jet with several boundaries with slots in them in order to obtain varying boundary solidities. The lift coefficients at the different boundary solidities were compared to computed values from an equation. Information about the effects of boundary solidity, the level of optimum solidity, and the effects of speed is provided.
