Description: An investigation has been made in the Langley low-turbulence pressure tunnel of the aerodynamic characteristics of the NACA 0012, 64(sub 2)-015, and 64(sub 3)-018 airfoil sections. Data were obtained at Mach numbers from 0.3 to that for tunnel choke, at angles of attack from -2deg to 30deg, and with the surface. of each airfoil smooth-and with roughness applied at the leading edge. The Reynolds numbers of the tests ranged from 0.8 x 10(exp 6) to 4.4 x 10(exp 6). The results are presented as vari… more

Chemical Properties of Elements 99 and 100

Description: A description of some of the chemical properties and of the methods used in the separations of elements 99 and 100 is given. The new elements exhibit the properties expected for the tenth and eleventh actinide elements. Attempts to produce an oxidation state greater than 111 of element 99 have been successful. In normal aqueous media only the 111 state of element 100 appears to exist. The relative spacings of the elution peaks of the new elements in some separations with ion exchange resin colu… more

Effect on the low-speed aerodynamic characteristics of a 49 degree sweptback wing having an aspect ratio of 3.78 of blowing air over the trailing-edge flap and aileron

Description: Report presenting an investigation in the full-scale tunnel to determine the effects on the aerodynamic characteristics of a 49.1 degree sweptback wing of blowing a high-energy stream of air over a trailing-edge flap and an aileron. The results indicated that significant increases in lift coefficient and an improvement in aileron effectiveness may be obtained by the blowing method of boundary-layer control.

Evaluation of Methods of Brazing Aluminum Spacing Fins to Flat-Plate Aluminum-Clad Fuel Elements

Description: Abstract: "Four brazing methods and one other joining process were evaluated for the joining of aluminum spacer fins to flat-plate aluminum-clad fuel elements. None of these methods appear completely suitable for use in a mass-production operation. Furnace brazing and salt-bath brazing were most promising. However, the mechanical problems involved in the application of either process deter their recommendation. Resistance brazing and torch-brazing were proven impractical. The great difference i… more

Investigation of the Jet Effects on a Flat Surface Downstream of the Exit of a Simulated Turbojet Nacelle at a Free-Stream Mach Number of 2.02

Description: "An investigation at a free-stream Mach number of 2.02 was made to determine the effects of a propulsive jet on a wing surface located in the vicinity of a choked convergent nozzle. Static-pressure surveys were made on a flat surface that was located in the vicinity of the propulsive jet. The nozzle was operated over a range of exit pressure ratios at different fixed vertical distances from the flat surface. Within the scope of this investigation, it was found that shock waves, formed in the ex… more

Description: From Summary: "An investigation was conducted in the Langley 19-foot pressure tunnel on a 0.3-scale model of the Republic RF-84F airplane to determine modifications which would eliminate the pitch-up that occurred near maximum lift during flight tests of the airplane. The effects of high-lift and stall-control devices, horizontal tail locations, external stores, and various inlets on the longitudinal characteristics of the model were investigated. For the most part, these tests were conducted a… more
