20-100 keV K(alpha) X-Ray Source Generation by Short Pulse High Intensity Lasers

Description: We are studying the feasibility of utilizing K{alpha} x-ray sources in the range of 20 to 100 keV as a backlighters for imaging various stages of implosions and high areal density planar samples driven by the NIF laser facility. The hard x-ray K{alpha} sources are created by relativistic electron plasma interactions in the target material after a radiation by short pulse high intensity lasers. In order to understand K{alpha} source characteristics such as production efficiency and brightness as… more

Advanced Oxidation Process

Description: The design of new, high efficiency and cleaner burning engines is strongly coupled with the removal of recalcitrant sulfur species, dibenzothiophene and its derivatives, from fuels. Oxidative desulfurization (ODS) wherein these dibenzothiophene derivatives are oxidized to their corresponding sulfoxides and sulfones is an approach that has gained significant attention. Fe-TAML{reg_sign} activators of hydrogen peroxide (TAML is Tetra-Amido-Macrocyclic-Ligand) convert in a catalytic process dibenz… more

Advanced Vehicle Testing Activity: High-Percentage Hydrogen/CNG Blend Ford F-150 Operating Summary - January 2003

Description: Over the past two years, Arizona Public Service, a subsidiary of Pinnacle West Capital Corporation, in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Energy's Advanced Vehicle Testing Activity, tested four gaseous fuel vehicles as part of its alternative fueled vehicle fleet. One vehicle operated initially using compressed natural gas (CNG) and later a blend of CNG and hydrogen. Of the other three vehicles, one was fueled with pure hydrogen and two were fueled with a blend of CNG and hydrogen. The thr… more

Airborne Laser (ABL): Issues for Congress

Description: This report examines the airborne laser (ABL) program and budget status. It also examines a variety of related issues, including the questionable maturity of ABL technologies, the number of ABL platforms the United States should acquire, and to what degree the United STates should invest in alternative technologies in the event that the ABL may not prove successful. This report does not provide a detailed technical assessment of the ABL program (see CRS Report RL30185, The Airborne Laser Anti-M… more

Analysis of polarimeter data for the 2001-2002 RHIC run.

Description: The results of several studies of the 200-MeV (LINAC), AGS (E880), and RHIC polarimeter data from the polarized proton run in 2001/2002 are presented. Much of this work occurred during or immediately after the run. Some of these analyses have implications for the understanding of the performance of the polarized ion source, AGS, and RHIC with polarized protons. Some of the conclusions include: (A) A recalibration of the 200-MeV polarimeter gives results consistent with the older calibration, bu… more

ANALYSIS OF SPACE CHARGE DRIVEN MODULATION IN ELECTRON BUNCH ENERGY SPECTRA.

Description: As was discussed earlier [1,2] longitudinal space charge force in initially nonuniform bunch transforms density fluctuations into energy modulation along the bunch. For characterization of the resulted energy modulation one can chirp the bunch using accelerator section, located upstream of beam spectrometer, and record energy spectrum of such chirped bunch. Measured spectrum shows structure with parameters, depending on the bunch properties. In this paper we present analysis of the structure in… more

Analytical and Numerical Ray Tracing of X-Ray Lasers

Description: Soft x-ray lasers in 10-30nm range are now routinely produced in hot plasmas generated either by a laser from a solid target or by an electrical discharge in a capillary. Such an x-ray laser is a convenient tool for future applications, such as probing dense plasmas of interest for fusion experiments. Their short wavelength enables plasma diagnosis beyond the capabilities of optical lasers, because the high critical plasma density ({approx}{lambda}{sup 2}) limits the optical beam propagation. I… more
