The action characterization matrix: A link between HERA (Human Events Reference for ATHEANA) and ATHEANA (a technique for human error analysis)

Description: The Technique for Human Error Analysis (ATHEANA) is a newly developed human reliability analysis (HRA) methodology that aims to facilitate better representation and integration of human performance into probabilistic risk assessment (PRA) modeling and quantification by analyzing risk-significant operating experience in the context of existing behavior science models. The fundamental premise of ATHEANA is that error-forcing contexts (EFCs), which refer to combinations of equipment/material condi… more

Attrition Resistant Iron-Based Fischer-Tropsch Catalysts.

Description: The Fischer-Tropsch (F-T) reaction provides a way of converting coal-derived synthesis gas (CO and H{sub 2}) to liquid fuels. Since the reaction is highly exothermic, one of the major problems in control of the reaction is heat removal. Recent work has shown that the use of slurry bubble column reactors (SBCRs) can largely solve this problem. Iron-based (Fe) catalysts are preferred catalysts for F-T when using low CO/H{sub 2} ratio synthesis gases derived from modern coal gasifiers. This is bec… more

AX tank farm waste inventory study for the Hanford Tanks Initiative (HTI) project

Description: In May of 1996, the US Department of Energy implemented a four-year demonstration project identified as the Hanford Tanks Initiative (HTI). The HTI mission is to minimize technical uncertainties and programmatic risks by conducting demonstrations to characterize and remove tank waste using technologies and methods that will be needed in the future to carry out tank waste remediation and tank farm closure at the Hanford Site. Included in the HTI scope is the development of retrieval performance … more

B plant transition project management plan

Description: The mission of the B Plant Transition Project is to place B Plant and its ancillary facilities (referred to as B Plant throughout this document) in a safe and stable condition which requires minimal long term surveillance and maintenance (S&M), thereby reducing the risks associated with the current radiological and chemical inventory and the costs for S&M until disposition. Transition may include activities such as removal of stored radioactive and hazardous materials, safe shutdown of support … more

Characterization of Tank 17 Residual Waste

Description: Plans are to close Tank 17, a type IV waste tank in the F-area Tank Farm, by filling it with pumpable backfills. Most of the waste was removed from the tank in the late 1980s, and the remainder of the waste was removed in a short spray washing campaign that began on 11 April 1997. More details on the planned closure can be found in the Closure Plan for the High-Level Waste (HLW) Tanks and the specific closure module for Tank 17. To show that closure of the tank is environmentally sound, a perfo… more

Chemical species of plutonium in Hanford radioactive tank waste

Description: Large quantities of radioactive wastes have been generated at the Hanford Site over its operating life. The wastes with the highest activities are stored underground in 177 large (mostly one million gallon volume) concrete tanks with steel liners. The wastes contain processing chemicals, cladding chemicals, fission products, and actinides that were neutralized to a basic pH before addition to the tanks to prevent corrosion of the steel liners. Because the mission of the Hanford Site was to prov… more

Comparison of neutron lifetimes as predicted by MCNP and DANTSYS

Description: The prompt removal lifetime algorithm used in the latest version of MCNP was modified to conform with the neutron-balance definitions described by Spriggs et al. In accordance with the neutron-balance theory, the non-adjoint-weighted removal lifetime is given by where {Phi} is the angular neutron flux, v is the neutron velocity, {Sigma}{sub a} is the macroscopic absorption cross section, E is neutron energy, {Omega} is angle, and r is a spatial vector. The numerator in this expression represent… more

CSER 97-008: 327 Building hot cell and SERF one-gallon can criticality analysis

Description: This CSER gives the limits for the storage of one-gallon cans in the hot cells and the SERF in the 327 Building. The 327 Building is used to perform post irradiation testing of fissionable materials in remotely manipulated hot cells. Historically, scrap pieces of fuel cladding, cleanup materials, and other items have been placed into one-gallon paint cans for storage and ultimately disposal. These cans of materials had been assumed to contain no (or essentially no) fissionable materials, and th… more

Density of simulated americium/curium melter feed solution

Description: Vitrification will be used to stabilize an americium/curium (Am/Cm) solution presently stored in F-Canyon for eventual transport to Oak Ridge National Laboratory and use in heavy isotope production programs. Prior to vitrification, a series of in-tank oxalate precipitation and nitric/oxalic acid washes will be used to separate these elements and lanthanide fission products from the bulk of the uranium and metal impurities present in the solution. Following nitric acid dissolution and oxalate de… more

Development of a ceramic form for immobilization of excess plutonium

Description: Between 8 and 50 metric tonnes of excess plutonium are currently planned to be immobilized in a glass or ceramic waste form in the US. The immobilized Pu would then be encased in HLW glass (the can-in-canister alternative), which would provide a radiation barrier to enhance the proliferation resistance of the material. Associated with the plutonium are about 15 metric tonnes of uranium primarily {sup 238}U and a variety of other impurities (primarily Ga, Mo, Al, Mg, Si, and Cl) totaling about 1… more

Direct numerical solution of Poisson`s equation in cylindrical (r, z) coordinates

Description: A direct solver method is developed for solving Poisson`s equation numerically for the electrostatic potential {phi}(r,z) in a cylindrical region (r < R{sub wall}, 0 < z < L). The method assumes the charge density {rho}(r,z) and wall potential {phi}(r = R{sub wall}, z) are specified, and {partial_derivative}{phi}/{partial_derivative}z = 0 at the axial boundaries (z = 0, L).

Engineering study of the criticality issues associated with Hanford tank 241-Z-361

Description: Tank 241-Z-361 is associated with the Plutonium Finishing Plant (PFP). Uncertainty about the contents of the tank have led to the declaration of an Unreviewed Safety Question (USQ) and the preparation of a Justification for Continued Operation (JCO) to address flammable gas and other authorization basis issued. A Criticality Safety Team was assembled to review old data, determine its validity, and reevaluate the tank. It was concluded that the tank has a sufficient margin of safety to allow ope… more

Establishing an appropriate baseline for assessing environmental impacts

Description: An important consideration in assessing environmental impacts for the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) is to establish a baseline from which to evaluate potential changes associated with a proposed action. For some assessments, establishment of the baseline is straightforward because the proposed action is located in an undeveloped area which has been negligibly affected by human activity. For other assessments, however, the baseline may be more difficult to determine because the propos… more

Final Report for the Demonstration of Plasma In-situ Vitrification at the 904-65G K-Reactor Seepage Basin

Description: The In-situ Vitrification (ISV) process potentially offers the most stable waste-form for containment of radiologically contaminated soils while minimizing personnel contamination. This is a problem that is extensive, and at the same time unique, to the US Department of Energy`s (DOE) Weapons Complex. An earlier ISV process utilized joule heating of the soil to generate the subsurface molten glass product. However previous test work has indicated that the Savannah river Site soils (SRS) may not… more
