235U Holdup Measurements in the 321-M Exhaust Elbows

Description: The Analytical Development Section of Savannah River Technology Center (SRTC) was requested by the Facilities Disposition Division (FDD) to determine the holdup of enriched uranium in the 321-M facility as part of an overall deactivation project of the facility. The 321-M facility was used to fabricate enriched uranium fuel assemblies, lithium-aluminum target tubes, neptunium assemblies, and miscellaneous components for the production reactors. The facility also includes the 324-M storage build… more

An Adaptive Particle Filtering Approach to Tracking Modes in a Varying Shallow Ocean Environment

Description: The shallow ocean environment is ever changing mostly due to temperature variations in its upper layers (< 100m) directly affecting sound propagation throughout. The need to develop processors that are capable of tracking these changes implies a stochastic as well as an 'adaptive' design. The stochastic requirement follows directly from the multitude of variations created by uncertain parameters and noise. Some work has been accomplished in this area, but the stochastic nature was constraine… more

Advanced waste forms research and development. Comprehensive progress report

Description: Progress is reported in the following research areas: cesium fixation in aluminosilicates and supercalcine development; low sodium wastes and high sodium wastes. Phase relations in the appropriate (for supercalcine) portion of the Cs/sub 2/O-Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/-SiO/sub 2/ system are being investigated. Several compatibility lines (tie lines) have been established on the phase diagram. Methods of preparing pure single phases of CsAlSiO/sub 4/ and CsAlSi/sub 2/O/sub 6/ (pollucite) are being develop… more

Agriculture and FY2006 Budget Reconciliation

Description: This report compares and contrasts the differences in House and Senate action on a FY2006 budget resolution. The report details that both bills would require cuts to mandatory programs within each committee's jurisdiction. Although no cuts will be required until a conference agreement on the resolution is reached.

Analysis of the January 2006 Pepper-Pot Experiments

Description: Between January 9-12, 2006 a series of experiments were performed on the DARHT-II injector to measure the beam's emittance. Part of these experiments were pepper-pot measurements. This note describes the analysis of the data, and our conclusions from the experiments.

Analysis Summary of an Assembled Western U.S. Dataset

Description: The dataset for this report is described in Walter et al. (2004) and consists primarily of Nevada Test Site (NTS) explosions, hole collapse and earthquakes. In addition, there were several earthquakes in California and Utah; earthquakes recorded near Cataract Creek, Arizona; mine blasts at two areas in Arizona; and two mine collapses in Wyoming. In the vicinity of NTS there were mainshock/aftershock sequences at Little Skull Mt, Scotty's Junction and Hector ere mine. All the events were shallow… more

Analytical Tests for Ray Effect Errors in Discrete Ordinate Methods for Solving the Neutron Transport Equation

Description: This paper contains three analytical solutions of transport problems which can be used to test ray-effect errors in the numerical solutions of the Boltzmann Transport Equation (BTE). We derived the first two solutions and the third was shown to us by M. Prasad. Since this paper is intended to be an internal LLNL report, no attempt was made to find the original derivations of the solutions in the literature in order to cite the authors for their work.

Bacillus anthracis genome organization in light of whole transcriptome sequencing

Description: Emerging knowledge of whole prokaryotic transcriptomes could validate a number of theoretical concepts introduced in the early days of genomics. What are the rules connecting gene expression levels with sequence determinants such as quantitative scores of promoters and terminators? Are translation efficiency measures, e.g. codon adaptation index and RBS score related to gene expression? We used the whole transcriptome shotgun sequencing of a bacterial pathogen Bacillus anthracis to assess corre… more
