An Approximate Method for Evaluating Neutron Punch Through in Certain Classes of Shielding Penetrations

Description: This note describes a method for making estimates of the effect of neutron "punch through" in geometries where transverse penetrations exist in shielding. The primary motivation here is concern in geometries involving labyrinths. The attenuation of labyrinth formula is extremely large in the second and subsequent legs of a labyrinth which may result in the actual dose in these legs being dominated by punch through.

Computational model of drilling with high radiance pulsed lasers. Revision 1

Description: A model of drilling by high radiance pulsed lasers is described. The model involves a one-dimensional description of heat transport below the bottom of the hole, hydrodynamic expansion of the vapor and compressed air, and light propagation through the vapor. The pressure and energy of the vapor are taken from a separate Saha equilibrium code. The boundary conditions at the vaporization surface include the formation of a transition layer within which macroscopic fluid conditions axe reached. The… more

Computer system requirements specification for 101-SY hydrogen mitigation test project data acquisition and control system (DACS-1)

Description: The system requirements specification for SY-101 hydrogen mitigation test project (HMTP) data acquisition and control system (DACS-1) documents the system requirements for the DACS-1 project. The purpose of the DACS is to provide data acquisition and control capabilities for the hydrogen mitigation testing of Tank SY-101. Mitigation testing uses a pump immersed in the waste, directed at varying angles and operated at different speeds and time durations. Tank and supporting instrumentation is br… more

Configuration management plan for the GENII software

Description: The GENII program calculates doses from radionuclides released into the environment for a variety of possible exposure scenarios. The user prepares an input data file with the necessary modelling assumptions and parameters. The program reads the user`s input file, computes the necessary doses and stores these results in an output file. The output file also contains a listing of the user`s input and gives the title lines from the data libraries which are accessed in the course of the calculation… more

CSER 94-011: Use of glovebags for demister draining operations

Description: A criticality safety review is presented for the use of plastic-sheet glovebags for the operations of draining demisters on the 26-inch vacuum system headers. A criticality drain is required because of the possibility for spilling liquid of sufficient volume and fissile content for criticality. It is recommended that the glovebag design include a rigid, 2ft {times} 2ft floor with a central drain feeding a geometrically favorable spill-catch vessel, plus a screen grid above the bottom for drain … more

CSER 94-015: New portable NDA equipment for use in SNM audits

Description: A criticality safety review is presented for the use of two portable NDA detectors from Los Alamos during an IAEA inspection of the SNM at PFP. The units are an Active Well Coincidence Counter (AWCC) and a High Level Neutron Coincidence Counter (HLNCC). Approval for their employment is based on the inherent safety of the containers to be assayed, one at a time, and because their designs conform with the acceptability criteria which allow the other NDA detectors currently employed at the facilit… more

Description of the Material Balance Model and Spreadsheet for Salt Dissolution

Description: The model employed to estimate the amount of inhibitors necessary for bearing water and dissolution water during the salt dissolution process is described. This model was inputed on a spreadsheet which allowed many different case studies to be performed. This memo describes the assumptions and equations which are used in the model, and documents the input and output cells of the spreadsheet. Two case studies are shown as examples of how the model may be employed.

Deterrence, denuclearization, and proliferation: Alternative visions of the next fifty years

Description: The great library of Alexandria may have contained fewer volumes than the number which have been written on the subject of nuclear weapons in the Cold War. With the end of the Cold War, a new nuclear library is in the making. Much thought is being given to the next steps in nuclear policy, strategy, forces, arms control, and nonproliferation. For this very distinguished conference, however, I have been asked to look further ahead indeed, forward fifty-years. Prognostication is always a risky bu… more

Dielectric constant measurements on n-heptane and 2-heptanone

Description: A liquid transfer station has been built and installed in a fume hood. The dielectric properties of n-heptane and 2-heptanone have been measured using the coaxial structure of the Model 100-1, S/N 1 as the liquid measurement cell. The low (10 kHz to 1 Mhz) frequency value of the relative dielectric constant {epsilon} r was measured with a HP 4275 Multifrequency LCR Meter. Also time domain reflection (TDR) and insertion time domain transmission (TDT) measurements were made using a HP 54120/54121… more

Effect of longer combination vehicles on the total logistic costs of truckload shippers

Description: The purpose of the research described in this paper was to examine the effects of using longer and heavier tractor-trailer combinations from the standpoint of the individual firm or shipper rather than from the viewpoint of the motor carrier. The objective was to determine the effect of longer combination vehicles (LCVS) not only on shippers freight costs but on their inventory and other logistical costs as well. A sample of companies in selected industries provided data on their principal prod… more

Engineering drawing field verification program. Revision 3

Description: Safe, efficient operation of waste tank farm facilities is dependent in part upon the availability of accurate, up-to-date plant drawings. Accurate plant drawings are also required in support of facility upgrades and future engineering remediation projects. This supporting document establishes the procedure for performing a visual field verification of engineering drawings, the degree of visual observation being performed and documenting the results. A copy of the drawing attesting to the degre… more
