Condensed draft action description memorandum for the decontamination and decommissioning of Battelle Columbus facilities

Description: Under provisions of the Surplus Facilities Management Program (SFMP), the US Department of Energy, Chicago Operations Office, proposes to provide funding for Surveillance and Maintenance (S & M) and subsequent Decontamination and Decommissioning (D & D) of fifteen facilities and associated premises belonging to Battelle Columbus Division. The fifteen facilities are contaminated as a result of nuclear research and development activities conducted over a period of approximately 43 years for DOE a… more

A hard x-ray spectrometer for high angular resolution observations of cosmic sources

Description: LAXRIS (large area x-ray imaging spectrometer) is an experimental, balloon-borne, hard x-ray telescope that consists of a coaligned array of x-ray imaging spectrometer modules capable of obtaining high angular resolution (1--3 arcminutes) with moderate energy resolution in the 20- to 300-keV region. Each spectrometer module consists of a CsI(Na) crystal coupled to a position-sensitive phototube with a crossed-wire, resistive readout. Imaging is provided by a coded aperture mask with a 4-m focal… more

Load on Trough Bellows Following an Argon Spill

Description: In the case of a gross argon spill from the DO detector, the liquid argon is caught in three plenums. These plenums are to be connected by bellows to make a horizontal trough open at one end for removing the argon. The design of these bellows is dependent on the maximum argon load they must carry. Bellows to connect the three argon-catching plenums in the DO detector must be able to carry at least 92 lbs of argon when closed and 231 lbs when open, plus the load due to argon in the convolutions.… more

No pain-no gain: The complex art of soft x-ray laser target design and analysis

Description: We review our methodologies in the design and analysis of soft x-ray laser experiments. We convolve large-scale 2-D hydro code output with detailed atomic data bases in a kinetics code with 1-D or 2-D line transfer. The time and space dependent level population data is then post processed further with a beam transport code, including refraction, to predict actual experimental results. While mysteries do remain, we present many examples that show how this complex modeling procedure is crucial in… more

Photoinitiated electron transfer in multichromophoric species: Synthetic tetrads and pentads

Description: This research project involves the design, synthesis and study of molecules which mimic many of the important aspects of photosynthetic electron and energy transfer. The knowledge gained from the study of synthetic model systems which abstract features of the natural photosynthetic apparatus can be used to design artificial photosynthetic systems which employ the basic physics and chemistry of photosynthesis to help meet mankind's energy needs. More specifically, the proposed models are designe… more

Premartensitic microstructures as seen in the high-resolution electron microscope: A study of a Ni-Al alloy

Description: The present study indicates that the B2 ..beta..-phase in quenched Ni/sub 62.5/Al/sub 37.5/ is distorted by displacement waves involving a planar shufflin of atoms resembling the final 7R martensite structure and with wavelenghts of the order of 1.3 nm. The appearance of a <110><110> type modulation with the indicated periodicity corresponds well with recent inelastic neutron scattering results which reveal nonlinear behavior in the TA<110> phonon dispersion curve around the same wavelengths in… more

Recent advances in atomic modeling

Description: Precision spectroscopy of solar plasmas has historically been the goad for advances in calculating the atomic physics and dynamics of highly ionized atoms. Recent efforts to understand the laboratory plasmas associated with magnetic and inertial confinement fusion, and with X-ray laser research, have played a similar role. Developments spurred by laboratory plasma research are applicable to the modeling of high-resolution spectra from both solar and cosmic X-ray sources, such as the photoionize… more

A summary of special coatings projects conducted in support of the Die Casting Program

Description: The usefulness of various kinds of coatings to the die casting program has been studied. This work includes heat transfer and fluid flow calculations, as well as experimental work, to examine the feasibility and characteristics of various types of coatings. Calculations include the effect of surface roughness on fluid flow, conductance as a function of coating thickness, conductivity as a function of coating porosity, and solidification and possible remelting of microspheres of metal. In each c… more
