100-D Area In Situ Redox Treatability Test for Chromate-Contaminated Groundwater

Description: A treatability test was conducted for the In Situ Redox Manipulation (ISRM) technology at the 100 D Area of the U. S. Department of Energy's Hanford Site. The target contaminant was dissolved chromate in groundwater. The ISRM technology creates a permeable subsurface treatment zone to reduce mobile chromate in groundwater to an insoluble form. The ISRM permeable treatment zone is created by reducing ferric iron to ferrous iron within the aquifer sediments, which is accomplished by injecting aqu… more

7Be(p,gamma)8B S-factor from Ab Initio Wave Functions

Description: There has been a significant progress in ab initio approaches to the structure of light nuclei. Starting from realistic two- and three-nucleon interactions the ab initio no-core shell model (NCSM) predicts low-lying levels in p-shell nuclei. It is a challenging task to extend ab initio methods to describe nuclear reactions. We present here a brief overview of the first steps taken toward nuclear reaction applications. In particular, we discuss our calculation of the {sup 7}Be(p,{gamma}){sup 8}B… more

Accuracy, precision, and lower detection limits (a deficit reduction approach)

Description: The evaluation of the accuracy, precision and lower detection limits of the determination of trace radionuclides in environmental samples can become quite sophisticated and time consuming. This in turn could add significant cost to the analyses being performed. In the present method, a {open_quotes}deficit reduction approach{close_quotes} has been taken to keep costs low, but at the same time provide defensible data. In order to measure the accuracy of a particular method, reference samples are… more

Advanced Tokamak Scenarios for the FIRE Burning Plasma Experiment

Description: The advanced tokamak (AT) capability of the Fusion Ignition Research Experiment (FIRE) burning plasma experiment is examined with 0-D systems analysis, equilibrium and ideal-MHD stability, radio-frequency current-drive analysis, and full discharge dynamic simulations. These analyses have identified the required parameters for attractive burning advanced tokamak plasmas, and indicate that these are feasible with the present progress on existing experimental tokamaks.

Aerodynamic Characteristics of a 1/8-Scale Powered Model of a High-Speed Bomber With a Dual Pusher Propeller Aft of the Empennage

Description: Report presenting wind-tunnel tests made to determine the aerodynamic characteristics of a scale model of a high-speed bomber with a dual pusher propeller aft of the empennage. Some of the results discussed include longitudinal, lateral, and directional stability and control, the empennage design, and ground effects on the aerodynamic characteristics. The results indicate that this particular airplane has several advantages with regard to stability and control over the conventional-type single-… more

Air Force B-21 Raider Long-Range Strike Bomber

Description: This report discusses the development of a new long-range bomber aircraft, the B-21 Raider (previously known as LRS-B). The U.S. Department of Defense proposes to acquire at least 100 of them, initially to replace the fleets of B-1 and B-2 bombers, and possibly to replace B-52s in the future.

Aircraft Integration and Flight Testing of 4STAR

Description: Under funding from the U.S. Dept. of Energy, in conjunction with a funded NASA 2008 ROSES proposal, with internal support from Battelle Pacific Northwest Division (PNWD), and in collaboration with NASA Ames Research Center, we successfully integrated the Spectrometer for Sky-Scanning, Sun-Tracking Atmospheric Research (4STAR-Air) instrument for flight operation aboard Battelle’s G-1 aircraft and conducted a series of airborne and ground-based intensive measurement campaigns (hereafter referred … more

Airfoil sampling of a pulsed Laval beam with tunable vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) synchrotron ionization quadrupole mass spectrometry: Application to low--temperature kinetics and product detection

Description: A new pulsed Laval nozzle apparatus with vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) synchrotron photoionization quadrupole mass spectrometry is constructed to study low-temperature radicalneutralchemical reactions of importance for modeling the atmosphere of Titan and the outer planets. A design for the sampling geometry of a pulsed Laval nozzle expansion has beendeveloped that operates successfully for the determination of rate coefficients by time-resolved mass spectrometry. The new concept employs airfoil sam… more

The Americans with Disabilities Act: Legislation Concerning Notification Prior to Initiating Legal Action

Description: The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) provides broad nondiscrimination protection in employment, public services, and public accommodation and services operated by private entities. Since the 106th Congress, legislation has been introduced to require plaintiffs to provide notice to the defendant prior to filing a complaint regarding public accommodations. In the 109th Congress, H.R. 2804 was introduced by Representative Foley to amend title III of the ADA to require notification.

Analysis of Hexanitrostilbene (HNS) and Dipicryethane (DPE) for Mutagenicity by the Ames/Salmonella Assay

Description: The Ames/Salmonella assay, developed by Professor Bruce Ames at the University of California, Berkeley, is a rapid and sensitive assay for detecting mutagenicity of various chemical compounds (Maron and Ames, 1983). It is a widely accepted short-term assay for detecting chemicals that induce mutations in the histidine (his) gene of Salmonella typhimurium. This is a reverse mutation assay that detects the mutational reversion of his-dependent Salmonella to the his-independent counterpart. Thereb… more

Applications of Laser and Synchrotron Based ARPES to Photocathode Research

Description: Laser angle resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES) provides unique information about angle and energy distribution of photoelectrons. Laser ARPES gives unique insight into how NEA materials work. ARPES combined with some ancillary measurements gives a very complete picture of system electronic physics. For H:C[100] there is now a clear program for engineering as well as development analogous systems. ARPES well suited for identifying 'ideal' photocathodes with intrinsically low emittance a… more
