60-inch annular pitch polisher for LASL's LASER-fusion effort

Description: The Antares laser will require that about 100 high-precision NaCl windows of 18-in. diameter be produced, maintained, and repaired. To aid the industry in achieving the required production rates, a polishing development program was undertaken by LASL's Laser Division in collaboration with the Air Force and International Laser Systems. The design and initial shakedown of the polishing machine is described. Preliminary results indicate the machine's design is sound, its operation is generally sim… more

Acoustic emission from beryllium

Description: The acoustic emission from both powder and ingot source beryllium has been measured as a function of strain and prior heat treatment. Most measurements were made during tensile deformation, but a limited number of compression tests have also been performed. The acoustic emission observed was of the burst type, with little or no contribution from continuous type emission. The emission was characterized by the variation of burst rate and average energy per burst as a function of strain. The tensi… more

Advanced-fueled fusion reactors suitable for direct energy conversion. Fourth quarterly progress report: October 1976--December 1976 and first quarterly progress report: January 1977--March 1977

Description: The direct energy conversion efficiencies calculated for Cat-D and D-/sup 3/He fueled Tokamak reactors are summarized over a range of reactor designs, collector configurations, assumed T/sub e//T/sub i/ ratios, and power densities. The performance of a system of superconducting coils that produce those fields required to guide escaping plasma along the path between the bundle divertor coils and the direct converter is also discussed.

Advanced-fueled fusion reactors suitable for direct energy conversion. Project note: temperature-gradient enhancement of electrical fields in insulators

Description: Direct energy converters for use on controlled fusion reactors utilize electrodes operated at elevated voltages and temperatures. The insulating elements that position these electrodes must support large voltages and under some circumstances large thermal gradients. It is shown that even modest thermal gradients can cause major alterations of the electric-field distribution within the insulating element.

Advanced Gas Cooled Nuclear Reactor Materials Evaluation and Development Program. Progress report, October 1, 1978--December 31, 1978

Description: Results of work performed from October 1, 1978 through December 31, 1978 on the Advanced Gas Cooled Nuclear Reactor Materials Evaluation and Development Program is presented. Objectives are to evaluate candidate alloys for Very High Temperature Reactor (VHTR) Nuclear Process Heat (NPH) and Direct Cycle Helium Turbine (DCHT) applications, in terms of the effect of simulated reactor primary coolant (helium containing small amounts of various other gases), high temperatures, and long time exposure… more

BWR pool dynamics in a loss of coolant accident. Calculation of the air-venting phase

Description: The authors calculated the air-venting phase of a loss of coolant accident (LOCA) in a BWR pool using both compressible and incompressible finite difference schemes, and compared the results with experiments made at the University of California, Los Angeles and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The incompressible approach was found to be the most effective, because of the very low flow Mach numbers involved. Theory and experiment were in good agreement.

Cadmium sulfide/copper sulfide heterojunction cell research. Technical progress report No. 2, January 1--March 31, 1978

Description: Poor adhesion of CdS films to zinc-plated copper foil substrates has been eliminated by depositing somewhat thinner films than earlier and by using the mat (as opposed to the smooth) side of the electroformed copper foil for deposition. Particle spatter effects have been reduced and cells of 4 cm/sup 2/ area have been produced with average efficiency of 5.4%. Use of Zn--plated Cu, Mo, Zn--plated Mo and glass substrates appears to influence the etching behavior of CdS films in dilute chromic aci… more

Capabilities for measuring physiocochemical properties at high pressure. [Up to 2000/sup 0/C and 30 GPa]

Description: A group of high-pressure systems that measure physicochemical properties of various media up to 2000/sup 0/C and 30 GPa is described. With these systems it is possible to determine complete stress-strain behavior, ultrasonic velocities, permeability, phase studies, fracture-flow behavior, and optical and electrical properties. The apparatus is described in terms of published results, photographs, and schematic diagrams. 63 references.

Carcinogenicity of Residual Fuel Oils by Nonbiological Laboratory Methods: Annotated Bibliography

Description: Recent emphases have been directed by Federal government regulatory agencies and other research groups on the carcinogenic effects of certain aromatic hydrocarbon components in naturally occurring petroleum products. These are used in plant operations, and underline the importance of evaluating environments. Since Rocky Flats Plant uses large quantities of fuel oil, the author was prompted to undertake a search of the chemical literature. Articles and accounts of studies were reviewed on nonbio… more

Charged particle fusion targets. [Energy requirements for inertial confinement fusion]

Description: The power, voltage, energy and other requirements of electron and ion beam fusion targets are reviewed. Single shell, multiple shell and magnetically insulated target designs are discussed. Questions of stability are also considered. In particular, it is shown that ion beam targets are stabilized by an energy spread in the ion beam.

Cladding creepdown under compression. [BWR; PWR]

Description: Light-water power reactors use Zircaloy tubing as cladding to contain the UO/sub 2/ fuel pellets. In-service operating conditions impose an external hydrostatic force on the cladding, causing it to creep down into eventual contact with the fuel. Knowledge of the rate of such creepdown is of great importance to modelers of fuel element performance. An experimental system was devised for studying creepdown that meets several severe requirements by providing (1) correct stress state, (2) multiple … more

Coal benefication program review

Description: This report is written to acquaint DOE personnel with the coal beneficiation program of the Ames Laboratory, Iowa State University. It appears that the involvement of the Laboratory in this area is not widely known, probably owing to the fact that much of the work performed here and the facilities developed here were initiated with state, rather than federal, support as part of the Iowa Coal Project. At this time, however, the Laboratory has committed itself to participation in a continuing and… more
