An approximate algorithm for the flux from a rectangular volume source

Description: An exact semi-analytic formula for the flux from a rectangular surface source with a slab shield has been derived and the required function table has been calculated. This formula is the basis for an algorithm which gives a good approximation for the flux from a rectangular volume source. No other hand calculation method for this source geometry is available in the literature.

Base hydrolysis and supercritical water oxidation of PBX-9404

Description: Base hydrolysis in combination with hydrothermal processing has been proposed as an environmentally acceptable alternative to open burning/open detonation for degradation and destruction of high explosives. In this report, the authors examine gaseous and aqueous products of base hydrolysis of the HMX-based plastic bonded explosive, PBX-9404. The authors also examine products from the subsequent hydrothermal treatment of the base hydrolysate. The gases produced from hydrolysis of PBX-9404 are am… more

Biocatalytic Removal of Organic Sulfur from Coal

Description: The objective is to characterize more completely the biochemical ability of the bacterium, Rhodococcus rhodochrous IGTS8, to cleave carbon-sulfur bonds with emphasis on data that will allow the development of a practical coal biodesulfurization process. Another approach for increasing the desulfurization activity of the IGTS8 cultures is to produce strains genetically that have higher activity. The goal of this part of research is to achieve strain improvement by introducing a stronger promoter… more

CC Pre-Amp Platform: Structural Analysis

Description: The structure in question is an existing personnel access platform located in the D-Zero Assembly Building. This platform is used to access the preamplifiers located on the central calorimeter. The platform will need to be shortened to a 'fold-out' length of 36 in. due to some modifications recently made to the detector. The purpose of this note is to determine whether this modification affects the safety and the rated load of the platform. Three of the load carrying members were analyzed; the … more

Comparison of the APS and UGIMAG Helmholtz coil systems

Description: UGIMAG is manufacturing the NdFeB permanent magnet blocks to be used in undulator A now being assembled by STI Optronics. The authors would like to be able to compare measurements made at the plant with those made at ANL and potentially with those made at the STI facility. Since there are no permanent magnet standard samples, measurement systems are compared by trading sets of magnets set aside as standards. APS has ten NdFeB permanent magnet blocks supplied by Sumitomo that they use to make th… more

Conceptual design report, Hazardous Materials Management and Emergency Response (HAMMER) Training Center

Description: For the next 30 years, the main activities at the US Department of Energy (DOE) Hanford Site will involve the management, handling, and cleanup of toxic substances. If the DOE is to meet its high standards of safety, the thousands of workers involved in these activities will need systematic training appropriate to their tasks and the risks associated with these tasks. Furthermore, emergency response for DOE shipments is the primary responsibility of state, tribal, and local governments. A colla… more

Decay of the {sup 194}Pb superdeformed band

Description: Three experiments using the {sup 174}Yb({sup 25}Mg,5n) reaction at a beam energy of 130 MeV have been performed utilizing the Early Implementation of GAMMASPHERE. The goal of these experiments was to study the decay of the known superdeformed states in {sup 194}Pb to the normal low-lying levels in this nucleus. The statistical decay of these band appears to be suppressed with respect to its {sup 194}Hg isobar. A single discrete transition at 2.746(2) MeV in coincidence with both the superdeform… more

Excess plutonium disposition: The deep borehole option

Description: This report reviews the current status of technologies required for the disposition of plutonium in Very Deep Holes (VDH). It is in response to a recent National Academy of Sciences (NAS) report which addressed the management of excess weapons plutonium and recommended three approaches to the ultimate disposition of excess plutonium: (1) fabrication and use as a fuel in existing or modified reactors in a once-through cycle, (2) vitrification with high-level radioactive waste for repository disp… more

FY 95 engineering work plan for the design reconstitution implementation action plan

Description: Design reconstitution work is to be performed as part of an overall effort to upgrade Configuration Management (CM) at TWRS. WHC policy is to implement a program that is compliant with DOE-STD-1073-93, Guide for Operational Configuration Management Program. DOE-STD-1073 requires an adjunct program for reconstituting design information. WHC-SD-WM-CM-009, Design Reconstitution Program Plan for Waste Tank Farms and 242-A Evaporator of Tank Waste Remediation System, is the TWRS plan for meeting DOE… more

Hanford Generic Interim Safety Basis

Description: The purpose of this document is to identify WHC programs and requirements that are an integral part of the authorization basis for nuclear facilities that are generic to all WHC-managed facilities. The purpose of these programs is to implement the DOE Orders, as WHC becomes contractually obligated to implement them. The Hanford Generic ISB focuses on the institutional controls and safety requirements identified in DOE Order 5480.23, Nuclear Safety Analysis Reports.

Description: Under contract between US DOE Idaho National Engineering Laboratory (INEL) and the Blackhawk Geosciences Division of Coleman Research Corporation (BGD-CRC), geophysical investigations were conducted to improve the detection of buried wastes. Over the Cold Test Pit (CTP) at INEL, data were acquired with multiple sensors on a dense grid. Over the CTP the interpretations inferred from geophysical data are compared with the known placement of various waste forms in the pit. The geophysical sensors … more

An investigation of genetic operators for continuous parameter space

Description: The success of a genetic optimization algorithm in continuous parameter space depends on the recombination (crossover) operators that it uses. In this paper we consider a wide spectrum of such operators within a unified framework and study their relative importance in the search process. We consider four basic types recombination operators which cover the relevant exploration potential of a continuous space: Interpolation, Extrapolation, Exchange and Mutation. Each of these basic types may have… more

A medium resolution minefield model suitable for entity-level resolution combat simulations

Description: A new, flexible, and realistic representation of conventional minefields in entity-level resolution combat simulations is presented. The model includes important aspects of minefield effects on battlefield entities and of breaching devices on minefields. The model is designed at ``medium resolution,`` that is, it is general enough to depict a wide variety of tactical situations accurately; however, it only represents tactically significant aspects of mine warfare, discarding or aggregating deta… more

Multiple-beam pulse shaping and preamplification

Description: Glass fusion laser systems typically use a master oscillator-power amplifier (MOPA) architecture, where control of the optical pulse temporal and spatial parameters is accomplished mainly in the master oscillator and low power optics. The pulses from this low power ``front end`` are amplified in the power amplifier, which modifies the pulse shape temporally and spatially. Nonlinear frequency conversion crystals following the amplifier further change the pulse before it reaches the target. To ef… more

New strong interactions above the electroweak scale

Description: Theoretical arguments for a new higher-color quark sector, based on Pomeron physics in QCD, are briefly described. The electroweak symmetry-breaking, Strong CP conservation, and electroweak scale CP violation, that is naturally produced by this sector is also outlined. A further consequence is that above the electroweak scale there will be a radical change in the strong interaction. Electroweak states, in particular multiple W`s and Z`s, and new, semi-stable, very massive, baryons, will be comm… more

Non-equilibrium dynamics in superconducting tunnel junction detectors

Description: Superconducting tunnel junctions have the potential to serve as high-resolution, high-efficiency x-ray detectors for astrophysical and industrial applications. When irradiated by X rays, each X ray excites over 10{sup 6} charge carriers which cause the detector to generate a pulse of current. We present an analysis of pulse shapes from detectors we have constructed and operated. We fit the decay of the current pulse to a simple model that considers two classes of carrier loss. One model conside… more
