100 Femtosecond laser absorption in solid density targets

Description: Experimental short pulse lasers are rapidly approaching energy levels where target irradiances exceeding 10{sup 20} W/CM{sup 2} are routinely achievable. These high intensity levels will open up a new class of solid target interaction physics where relativistic effects must be included and non-traditional absorption mechanisms become significant. However much remains to be understood of the absorption physics at lower intensities where classical absorption is dominated by collisional and resona… more

Accelerated Exposure Tests of Encapsulated Si Solar Cells and Encapsulation Materials

Description: We have conducted a series of accelerated exposure test (AET) studies for various crystalline-Si (c-Si) and amorphous-Si (a-Si) cell samples that were encapsulated with different superstrates, pottants, and substrates. Nonuniform browning patterns of ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) pottants were observed for glass/EVA/glass-encapsulated c-Si cell samples under solar simulator exposures at elevated temperatures. The polymer/polymer-configured laminates with Tedlar or Tefzel did not discolor because… more

The addition of disilanes to cumulenes

Description: The syntheses of silicon-containing compounds and the studies of their rearrangements have been active research areas in the Barton research group. Previously, the addition of disilanes to acetylenes was studied in the group and an intramolecular 2S + 2A mechanism has been proposed. In this thesis, the work is focused on the addition of disilanes to cumulenes. The syntheses of the precursors are discussed and the possible mechanisms for their thermal, photochemical and catalytic rearrangements … more

Aerogel Derived Nanostructured Thermoelectric Materials

Description: America’s dependence on foreign sources for fuel represents a economic and security threat for the country. These non renewable resources are depleting, and the effects of pollutants from fuels such as oil are reaching a problematic that affects the global community. Solar concentration power (SCP) production systems offer the opportunity to harness one of the United States’ most under utilized natural resources; sunlight. While commercialization of this technology is increasing, in order to be… more

The Ags-Based Super Neutrino Beam Facility Conceptual Design Report

Description: After more than 40 years of operation, the AGS is still at the heart of the Brookhaven hadron accelerator complex. This system of accelerators presently comprises a 200 MeV linac for the pre-acceleration of high intensity and polarized protons, two Tandem Van der Graaffs for the pre-acceleration of heavy ion beams, a versatile Booster that allows for efficient injection of all three types of beams into the AGS and, most recently, the two RHIC collider rings that produce high luminosity heavy io… more

Aligning ontologies and integrating textual evidence for pathway analysis of microarray data

Description: Expression arrays are introducing a paradigmatic change in biology by shifting experimental approaches from single gene studies to genome-level analysis, monitoring the ex-pression levels of several thousands of genes in parallel. The massive amounts of data obtained from the microarray data needs to be integrated and interpreted to infer biological meaning within the context of information-rich pathways. In this paper, we present a methodology that integrates textual information with annotatio… more

Amplification of an ultra short pulse laser by stimulated Raman scattering of a 1 ns pulse in a low density plasma

Description: Experiments are described in which a 1mJ, 1ps, 1200 nm seed laser beam is amplified by interaction with an intersecting 350 J, 1ns, 1054 nm pump beam in a low density (1 x 10{sup 19}/cm{sup 3}) plasma. The transmission of the seed beam is observed to be enhanced by > {approx} 25 x when the plasma is near the resonant density for stimulated Raman scattering (SRS), compared to measured transmissions at wavelengths just below the resonant value. The amplification is observed to increase rapidly… more

Analysis for Eccentric Multi Canister Overpack (MCO) Drops at the Canister Storage Building (CSB) (CSB-S-0073)

Description: Multi-Canister Overpacks (MCOs) containing spent nuclear fuel (SNF) will be routinely handled at the Canister Storage Building (CSB) during fuel movement operations in the SNF Project. This analysis was performed to investigate the potential for damage from an eccentric accidental drop onto the standard storage tube, overpack tube, service station, or sample/weld station. Appendix D was added to the FDNW document to include the peer Review Comment Record & transmittal record.

ANALYSIS OF HARRELL MONOSODIUM TITANATE LOT #s 46000606120, 46000722120, AND 46000808120

Description: Monosodium titanate (MST) for use in the Actinide Removal Process (ARP) must be qualified and verified in advance. A single qualification sample for each batch of material is sent to SRNL for analysis, as well as a statistical sampling of verification samples. The Harrell Industries Lot #s 46000706120, 46000722120, and 460008081120 qualification and verification samples met each of the selected specification requirements that were tested with the exception of a few pails being marginally below … more

Analysis of the Tax Exclusion for Canceled Mortgage Debt Income

Description: The Mortgage Forgiveness Debt Relief Act of 2007, P.L. 110-142, signed into law on December 20,2007, temporarily excludes qualified COD income. Thus, the act allows taxpayers who do not qualify for the existing exceptions to exclude COD income. The provision is effective for debt discharged before January 1, 2010. The Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008, P.L. 110-343, extends the exclusion of COD income to debt discharged before January 1, 2013.

Analysis of turbojet-engine controls for afterburning starting

Description: From Introduction: "The object of this report is to investigate the effects of after-burner lighting on the engine behavior and control-system requirements of a controlled turbojet engine. In this report, a simulation procedure for the afterburner is developed (based on ref. 3), this afterburner simulation is coordinated with previously developed nonafterburning-engine simulation procedures (ref. 4), and the compensated interacting control systems of references 1 and 2 are used. The results of … more

An analytical study of sideslip angles and vertical-tail loads in rolling pullouts as affected by some characteristics of modern high-speed airplane configurations

Description: From Introduction: "The rolling-pullout maneuver (any maneuver in which rolls occur during high g flight conditions) has been shown to be pertinent to design considerations from the standpoint of the loads produced on a vertical tail (refs. 1 to 3). In order to understand this problem better, the results of an analytical study of effects of large variations of some of the lateral-stability-derivative coefficients on the maximum angle of sideslip at first peak of its oscillation are presented in… more

Application of Ultrasonic Guided Waves to the Characterization of Texture in Metal Sheets of Cubic and Hexagonal Crystallites

Description: Ultrasonic techniques have recently been applied to the texture characterization in polycrystalline aggregates of hexagonal crystals. The basis of this application lies in the relations between the elastic constants {bar C}{sub ij} of the aggregates, which can be inferred from ultrasonic wave velocity measurements, and the orientation distribution coefficients. This communication present such relations for aggregates which possess orthotopic material symmetry and hexagonal crystal symmetry for … more

Aspects of C-H Activation in Metal Complexes Containing Sulfur Ligands

Description: The research project proposed to synthesize new metal complexes with sulfido, disulfido and other types of reactive sulfur ligands, and to explore the joint reactivity of metal and sulfur ligands with hydrogen and organic molecules. The overall objective was to investigate reaction pathways relevant to those observed for the heterogeneous metal sulfide catalysts which promote hydrogen activation, hydrogenation-dehydrogenation of organic substrates, and hydrogenolysis of carbon-heteroatom bonds.… more
