Effects of Wing-Mounted Tank-Type Stores on the Low Lift Buffeting and Drag of a Swept-Wing Airplane Configuration Between Mach Numbers of 0.8 and 1.3

Description: Memorandum presenting tests of two rocket-powered models of a 45 degree swept-wing airplane configuration with different underwing fuel-tank installations located at approximately half the wing semispan. Results of the tests were compared with previously reported data from a similar configuration with no tanks and with isolated tank data. These results include trim, buffeting, drag, and static longitudinal stability are provided.

When the missile was mounted under the wing at the midsemispan location, changes in chordwise position produced large changes in missile forces and moments.

Flight and Preflight Tests of a Ram Jet Burning Magnesium Slurry Fuel and Utilizing a Solid-Propellant Gas Generator for Fuel Expulsion

Description: Data obtained from the first flight test of a ram jet utilizing a magnesium slurry fuel are presented. The ram jet accelerated from a Mach number of 1.75 to a Mach number of 3.48 in 15.5 seconds. During this period a maximum values of air specific impulse and gross thrust coefficient were calculated to be 151 seconds and 0.658, respectively. The rocket gas generator used as a fuel-pumping system operated successfully.

Flight Measurements of the Dynamic Lateral and Longitudinal Stability of the Bell X-5 Research Airplane at 58.7 Degrees Sweepback

Description: Memorandum presenting an investigation of the dynamic stability of the Bell X-5 research airplane at 58.7 degrees sweepback and at altitudes of 40,000 feet and 25,000 feet over a Mach number range of 0.5 to 0.97. Incompressible Flutter Characteristics of Representative Aircraft Wings

Description: "This report gives the results of a detailed study of the flutter characteristics of four representative aircraft wings. This study was made using the electric-analog computer at the California Institute of Technology. During the course of this investigation eight important parameters of each wing were varied and, in addition, the effects of mass, inertia, pitching spring, and location of a concentrated mass were investigated for all four wings and at several sweepback angles" (p. 1385).

The Mechanical Properties of Beta-Quenched Uranium at Elevated Temperatures

Description: The creep strength and tensile properties-were determined in vacuum for beta-quenched, derby uranium. The stresses to produce a secondary creep rate of- 0.0001 per cent per hr at 100, 250, 400, and 500 deg C were 48,000, sile strengths were 114,500, 35,100, 11,100, and 8,500 psi at temperatares of 28, 300, 500, and 700 deg C, respectively. The creep and tensile strengths decrease quite rapidly with increasing temperature in the temperatare range 250 to 400 deg C.

Motor load study 190-C-process pump drive

A Numerical Integration Scheme for Problems Involving Contour Representations

Description: The definition of the Lebesgue integral is used to develop a numerical integration method in which the integral is evaluated directly from a contour plot of the function. It is useful in working from weather maps, potential surfaces, etc., but was particularly designed to assist in reducing blast diffraction space-time diagrams to simple, meaningful quantities.

Reflector Moderated Solid Fuel Element Sodium Cooled Reactor Critical Mass vs. Power Density

Description: This is the sixth of seven reports to be issued on the parametric studies of reflector-island moderated and core moderated solid fuel element reactors. The power distribution and hence fuel volume were varied for the optimum island size reflector moderated reactor. The effect on the critical mass, power distribution and neutron leakage was determined and is plotted in Figures 1, 2, and 3.
