Commissioning of polarized-proton and antiproton beams at Fermilab

Description: The author described the polarized-proton and polarized-antiproton beams up to 200 GeV/c at Fermilab. The beam line, called MP, consists of the 400-m long primary and 350-m long secondary beam line followed by 60-m long experimental hall. We discuss the characteristics of the polarized beams. The Fermilab polarization projects are designated at E-581/704 initiated and carried out by an international collaboration, Argonne (US), Fermilab (US), Kyoto-Kyushu-Hiroshima-KEK (Japan), LAPP (France), N… more

D0 Cryogenic In-Line Filters

Description: The DO cryogenic system utilizes liquid argon (serving as the detector ionizing medium) and liquid nitrogen (refrigerant for the argon). In order to keep these fluids pure and minimize the likelihood of plugged instrumentation due to contamination, in-line filters will be installed on the following lines (see Cryogenic Flow Diagram, drawing 3740-ME-222394): 445LN, 412LN, 447LA, 427LA. and 422GA. The lines referred to by these labels are argon dewar LN2 supply, cryostat LN2 supply, LAr dewar fil… more

Dried plutonium nitrate decontamination using HNO{sub 3} or Freon 113

Description: A request was made of the Separations Technology Laboratory to perform tests to determine the relative effectiveness of Freon 113 and 18% (3.15M) nitric acid on removing dried plutonium nitrate from Hypalon{reg_sign} gloves destined for use in F B-Line. Freon 113 was very inefficient for removing dried plutonium nitrate under conditions of moderate agitation of the liquid in contact with the dried compound. Nitric acid proved to be an excellent agent for decontaminating purposes for both the gl… more

Education Proposals in Trade Competitiveness Legislation

Description: Improvement on America's competitive position in international trade is one of the major issues confronting the 100th Congress. Most legislative proposals have included provisions for increasing the funding levels for Federal education programs, expanding current programs, or authorizing new programs. The primary goal is to improve the productivity of the Nation's workers by raising the skill level of the workforce. Discussions about education's role i n addressing the competitiveness issue hav… more

Electromagnetic pair production in relativistic heavy-ion collisions

Description: We survey the production of electron, muon and tauon pairs in collisions between nuclei at ultra-relativistic energies. Such studies enhance our understanding of the role of the vacuum in field theory, and provide essential input for several experimental programs. A variety of models for the nuclear and nucleon form factors have been considered, revealing some degree of sensitivity to assumptions about sub-nuclear structure. We predict that the cross sections, even at high invariant masses and … more

(Gas discharges and applications)

Description: The traveler attended the Ninth International Conference on Gas Discharges and Their Applications, which was held in Venice, Italy, on September 19--23, 1988; presented two papers, (1) Ion Chemistry in SF{sub 6} Corona'' and (2) Production of S{sub 2}F{sub 10} by SF{sub 6} Spark Discharge''; and participated in numerous discussions with conference participants on gas discharges related to his work on SF{sub 6}. The traveler visited the Centre de Physique Atomique at the Univ… more

The internal bunch coordinate monitor (IBCM)

Description: An instrument has been developed and installed at the AGS for recording the transverse motion of each rf bunch. It can be operated from any node of the Apollo control system. A preliminary version of this report has appeared elsewhere. Appendix A is an instruction manual. Two digitizers, running off the same 100 MHz clock, sampled the output of either a horizontal or vertical pick-up electrode (PUE) pair. The coordinate of each rf bunch was calculated each time it passed the PUEs during a 320 m… more

Localized corrosion and stress corrosion cracking of candidate materials for high-level radioactive waste disposal containers in the US: A literature review

Description: Container materials may undergo any of several modes of degradation in this environment, including: undesirable phase transformations due to lack of phase stability; atmospheric oxidation; general aqueous corrosion; pitting; crevice corrosion; intergranular stress corrosion cracking (IGSCC); and transgranular stress corrosion cracking (TGSCC). This paper is an analysis of data from the literature relevant to the pitting, crevice corrosion, and stress corrosion cracking (SCC) of these alloys. Th… more

Muon fluence measurements during the 1987-1988 fixed-target run

Description: Muon fluence and dose equivalent have been observed at the Fermilab site boundary for the MC, MW, and NM beam lines. For MC and MW, the 1987 annual dose equivalents of 2.9 and 1.2 mrem respectively, are less than the 10 mrem site boundary goal. For the new NM beam line, on the other hand, the observed value 13.1 mrem exceeded this operational goal. Indeed, it was this observation that necessitated the additional ''spoilers'' downstream of the E665 experiment. With these magnets in place, howeve… more

Optical simulation for imaging reconnaissance and intelligence sensors OSIRIS: High fidelity sensor simulation test bed; Modified user`s manual

Description: The OSIRIS program is an imaging optical simulation program which has been developed to predict the output of space-borne sensor systems. The simulation is radiometrically precise and includes highly realistic laser, atmosphere, and earth background models, as well as detailed models of optical components. This system was developed by Rockwell Power Services for the Los Alamos National Laboratory. It is based upon the LARC (Los Alamos Radiometry Code, also by Rockwell), and uses a similar comma… more

PACER Revisited

Description: This paper discusses a modified version of the PACER concept for power and nuclear material production, which changes the working fluid in the cavity from steam to the molten salt, LiF + BeF/sub 2/. In the PACER concept, a 20-kt peaceful nuclear explosion is contained in a cavity about 200 m in diameter, filled with 200 atm of 500/degree/C steam. Energy from the explosion is used to produce power, and the neutrons are used to produce materials such as /sup 233/U, Pu, /sup 60/Co, and T. The pres… more

A review of experimental progress in gluonia

Description: There has been considerable progress in gluonia investigations and their analysis. As requested by the Convenor, Rich Galik, I will cover the highlights of various conference papers and related work in an integrated manner which incorporates a review of the present state of glueballs (gluonia) to the extent space limitations allow. There are four general methods of searching for glueballs: J//psi/ radiative decay (iota, theta, xi(2.2)); OZI violating (g/sub T/, g/sub T/', g/sub T//double prime/… more

Seismic monitoring of the June, 1988 Salton Sea Scientific Drilling Program flow/injection test

Description: The purpose of the seismic monitoring project was to characterize in detail the micro-seismic activity related to the Salton Sea Scientific Drilling Program (SSSDP) flow-injection test in the Salton Sea Geothermal Field. Our goal was to determine if any sources of seismic energy related to the test were observable at the surface. We deployed our recording stations so that we could detect and locate both impulsive microearthquakes and continuous seismic noise energy. Our network, which was sensi… more

Tank evaluation system shielded annular tank application

Description: TEST (Tank Evaluation SysTem) is a research project utilizing neutron interrogation techniques to analyze the content of nuclear poisons and moderators in tank shielding. TEST experiments were performed on an experimental SAT (Shielded Annular Tank) at the Rocky Flats Plant. The purpose of these experiments was threefold: (1) to assess TEST application to SATs, (2) to determine if Nuclear Safety inspection criteria could be met, and (3) to perform a preliminary calibration of TEST for SATs.
