Adsorption of Activated Nitrogen

Description: The information obtained in this experiment was deduced by measuring the pumping speed as a function of the energy of the incident electrons and as a function of the energy which ions hit the surface.

Alternating Gradient Magnets

Description: The angle by which a magnet deflects the trajectory of a particle in the x-z plane is proportional to the integral [integral not transcribed] taken over the trajectory wherever B≠0. Alternating gradient focusing is achieved by designing magnets so that I=I(x) varies linearly with x over a suitable x interval. Usually this is done by shaping the poles to give a linear variation of By with x while keeping the length of the magnet constant for different x. Certain advantaged may be gained by varyi… more

The Cellular Differences Between Acute and Chronic Neutron and Gamma Ray Irradiation in Mice

Description: It has been well established that even small doses of radiation will shorten life expectancy of animals, and that in general the causes of death are the same for the irradiated as for the normal animals. When x or γ rays are compared with neutrons in their ability to shorten the life span, some interesting differences appear. All available data from different laboratories on the shortening of the life span by x or γ on the one hand and neutrons on the other, have been compared. In spite of the … more

Chemical Binding in the Water Molecule

Description: From Introduction : "This analysis partitions the electron density and the electronic pair density of the molecule into components corresponding promoted atomic states, to quasiclassical coulombic interactions of these promoted states, and to interactions resulting from the sharing of electrons between atoms."

Crud deposition in KER loops at pH 10 LiOH

Description: One of the problems which may be encountered in the operation of NPR, or of any similar pressurized-water reactor, is the deposition of crud in the reactor core, particularly on the surfaces of the fuel elements. This crud consists primarily of iron oxides resulting from the corrosion of the piping. It has generally been found to deposit preferentially in a radiation field such as is present in the reactor core. Such deposition is undesirable for two reasons. First, the crud will become activat… more

Current-Carrying Capacity and Transition State of Superconducting Solenoids

Description: Montgomery and Chandrasekhar and Hulm suggested models for predicting Im and Hm of high-field superconducting solenoids. Montgomery's model for predicting the degradation effect of superconducting solenoids leads to a unique coil quenching characteristics if geometrically similar solenoids are considered. Experiments do not verify these predicted results. Chandrasekhar and Hulm's model leads to one unique coil quenching characteristic for all solenoids with identical wire type and turn distan… more

The Effects of 2.0 BeV Protons in Mice

Description: The Brookhaven proton synchrotron (Cosmotron) is capable of accelerating protons to energies as high as 3.0 BeV. The biologic effects of particle bombardment at these energies have not been investigated but are of considerable radiobiologic interest. In addition, particle beams have long been discussed with regard to their potential usefulness in medical therapy, and actual clinical applications have been made, although at lower particle energies. Recent rapid advances in space technology have … more

Flowsheet for americium recovery and purification

Description: Americium (atomic weight 241) grows into plutonium as a result of the 13-year half-life beta decay of Pu{sup 241}. An appreciable quantity of Am{sup 241} has.grown into the scrap that accumulated following shut-down of the Recuplex facility, and which will be processed during the initial period of operation of the plutonium reclamation facility. Current interests in trans-plutonium research and in isotopic heat sources make it desirable to consider the recovery of this Am{sup 241}. The americiu… more

Forecast reactor water leaks

Description: Reactor water leaks cause outage time for locating and eliminating the leaks and for repairing damage paused by the vater that enters the reactor. The justification for equipment and process changes necessary for reducing the number of leaks and the resultant outage time is dependent on the number of leaks expected. This document presents an estimate of the future reactor water leak frequency and the average outage time charged to each leak. A water leak is defined as any entry of vater into th… more

High Purity Calcium

Description: Technical report. From Introduction : "For more than a century, methods employed in preparing calcium were based largely on electrowinning and the most successful were based on [Sir Humphrey] Davy's process. ... In general, the metal was of adequate quality for the industrial applications of the time, and although by 1940 some strides had been made in the purification of calcium, interests in the better grades of the metal were limited essentially to experimental work of academic concern."

KER-4 operating report, Test K-4-14, PT IP-477-A, PT IP-482-A

Description: Test K-4-14 described in this report, was the second ``full charge`` test to be irradiated in KER-4 following loop modification under Project CGI-839. It provided an opportunity to accumulate additional data on the behavior of N Reactor fuel elements at conditions equivalent to or more severe than those anticipated in N Reactor during Phase I, equilibrium operation. Objectives and test results are provided.

Mass Systematics Involving Low-Lying Excited States

Description: Technical report. From Abstract : "A step phenomenon in the nuclidic mass excess surface associated with magic numbers N, Z = 8 and 20 is shown to exist, whereas only breaks occur at higher magic numbers. Excited states are included which reveals possible smooth trends within Shell-Model subshells."

PITA IP-22, Sup III: Demonstration load

Description: The purpose of this supplement is to authorize charging the complete central zone core of H Reactor with the modified E-N charge makeup, installed as a 102-tube ``test core`` in the fifth loading. The potential economic and efficiency gains of a simplified charge pattern (a smaller average number of N pieces per tube and a minimum number of different charge types) were discussed in Supplement II to the parent PITA. Accordingly, a test block, consisting of 102 process channels in the center of t… more

Progressive Epithelial Dysplasia in Mouse Skin Irradiated with 10 MeV Protons

Description: It has been previously reported that within twenty days following bombardment of mice 10 MeV protons (as well as with 20 MeV deuterons and 40 MeV alpha particles) that atypical epithelial hyperplasia developed without underlying recognizable vascular or collagen alterations as predisposing factors. The source of these monoenergetic accelerator-produced heavy ionizing particles was the 60-inch cyclotron of the Brookhaven National Laboratory. Reactor power level limits

Description: This document is submitted in response to a request from the Atomic Energy Commission for a report on the safety aspects of reactor operation at bulk outlet temperatures in the neighborhood of 95 C. To properly describe the safety aspects of operation it is necessary to address the report to the engineering parameters associated with reactor operation and compare them to actual technical limits. Also, some discussion of administrative power level limits and bulk outlet temperature is in order.
