An 805 MHz disk and washer structure for the Fermilab Linac Upgrade

Description: The Linac Upgrade program, a portion of the Tevatron Upgrade, calls for increasing the energy of the existing 200 MeV, 201.25 MHz linac to 400 MeV in order to reduce beam emittance degradation in the Booster. This is to be accomplished by replacing the last four Alvarez linac tanks with more efficient, higher gradient 805 MHz linac structure. One of the linac structures currently under study in a collaboration between Fermilab and SAIC is the Disk-and-Washer accelerating structure with bi-perio… more

1999 Annual Cathodic Protection Survey Report for PFP

Description: This cathodic protection (CP) report documents the results of the 1999 annual CP survey of the underground piping within PFP property. An annual survey of CP systems is required by Washington Administrative Code (WAC). A spreadsheet to document the 1999 annual survey polarization data is included in this report. Graphs are included to trend the cathodic voltages and the polarization voltages at each test station on PFP property. The trending spans from 1994 to 1999. Graphs are also included to … more

A 2D fluid model of the DC planar magnetron cathode

Description: This model finds the plasma density distribution, n(x,y), and the positive electrical potential, {phi}{sub {infinity}}, between the surface of a planar magnetron cathode and a distant, uniform plasma. The intended application is for parameter studies of gas discharges in the range of 1--100 mTorr, which are often used as sputtering sources. The primary results are formulas which show how the spatial variation of the magnetic field, B(x,y), shapes the plasma density and influences the potential,… more

3DIVS: 3-Dimensional Immersive Virtual Sculpting

Description: Virtual Environments (VEs) have the potential to revolutionize traditional product design by enabling the transition from conventional CAD to fully digital product development. The presented prototype system targets closing the ''digital gap'' as introduced by the need for physical models such as clay models or mockups in the traditional product design and evaluation cycle. We describe a design environment that provides an intuitive human-machine interface for the creation and manipulation of t… more

Abortion: Legislative Response

Description: The primary focus of this issue brief is legislative action in the 108th Congress with respect to abortion. However, discussion of those legislative proposals necessarily involves a brief discussion of the leading U.S. Supreme Court decisions concerning a woman’s right to choose whether to terminate her pregnancy. For a more detailed discussion of the relevant case law, see CRS Report 95-724, Abortion Law Development: A Brief Overview.

ANALYSIS OF TANK 48H SAMPLE HTF-E-05-021

Description: Due to the need for additional HLW storage, successful disposition of the material in Tank 48H and return of the tank to routine service are two critically needed activities. As an initial step in the process, SRNL compositionally characterized the components of the Tank 48H slurry. Previously, a Tank 48H slurry sample was collected on August 23, 2004 (HTF-E-04-049 and HTF-E-04-050). The August 23, 2004 sample contained approximately 2 Liters of Tank 48H slurry. In December 7, 2004, Tank farm p… more

Analytical investigation of flow through high-speed mixed-flow turbine

Description: From Introduction: "Good experimental correlation of the analytical results was obtained for the compressor even though isentropic flow and axial symmetry were assumed (reference 1). In order to determine the flow through the turbine being investigated, however, it was necessary to extend the method of reference 1 to include the flow downstream of the rooter since the large blade taper and hub-shroud curvature caused downstream conditions which affected the flow inside the rotor."

Annual Report of the International Nuclear Research Initiative Osmose Project (FY05).

Description: The goal of the OSMOSE program is to measure the reactivity effect of minor actinides in known neutron spectra of interest to the Generation-IV reactor program and other programs and to create a database of these results for use as an international benchmark for the minor actinides. The results are then compared to calculational models to verify and validate integral absorption cross-sections for the minor actinides. The OSMOSE program includes all aspects of the experimental program -- includi… more

Answering Key Fuel Cycle Questions

Description: Given the range of fuel cycle goals and criteria, and the wide range of fuel cycle options, how can the set of options eventually be narrowed in a transparent and justifiable fashion? It is impractical to develop all options. We suggest an approach that starts by considering a range of goals for the Advanced Fuel Cycle Initiative (AFCI) and then posits seven questions, such as whether Cs and Sr isotopes should be separated from spent fuel and, if so, what should be done with them. For each ques… more
