Competitive economics of nuclear power

Description: Some 12 components of a valid study of the competitive economics of a newly ordered nuclear power plant are identified and explicated. These are then used to adjust the original cost projections of four authoritative studies of nuclear and coal power economics.

Concentrating-collector mass-production feasibility. Volume I. Final report

Description: The Performance Prototype Trough (PPT) Concentrating Collector consists of four 80-foot modules in a 320-foot row. The collector was analyzed, including cost estimates and manufacturing processes to produce collectors in volumes from 100 to 100,000 modules per year. The four different reflector concepts considered were the sandwich reflector structure, sheet metal reflector structure, molded reflector structure, and glass laminate structure. The sheet metal and glass laminate structures are emp… more

An Economic Analysis and Brief Legislative Overview of Usury Ceilings

Description: This report gives an economic analysis of usury ceilings, laws which set the maximum legal rate of interest to be charged on particular types of loans. It provides a brief overview of recent Federal l e g i s l a t i o n dealing with usury, with special emphasis on the Federal authorities mandated by P.L. 96-221, and the effectiveness of Federal preemption of State usury laws.

Human factors engineering design review acceptance criteria for the safety parameter display

Description: This report contains human factors engineering design review acceptance criteria developed by the Human Factors Engineering Branch (HFEB) of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) to use in evaluating designs of the Safety Parameter Display System (SPDS). These criteria were developed in response to the functional design criteria for the SPDS defined in NUREG-0696, Functional Criteria for Emergency Response Facilities. The purpose of this report is to identify design review acceptance criteria… more

Large area silicon sheet by EFG. Annual progress report, October 1, 1979-September 30, 1980

Description: Progress in the development of a cartridge system for growth of 10 cm wide ribbon is described. Growth speed capability, automated growth, ribbon quality and solar cell performance are areas in which significant progress is reported. Routine growth of 10 cm wide ribbon at speeds in the range from 3.5 to 4.0 cm/minute has been demonstrated both in single cartridge and multiple ribbon furnaces. Simultaneous growth of three 10 cm wide ribbons over a period of several hours has also been accomplish… more

Machine and plasma diagnostic instrumentation systems for the Tandem Mirror Experiment Upgrade

Description: To evaluate performance of a second generation Tandem Mirror Machine, an extensive instrumentation system is being designed and installed as part of the major device fabrication. The systems listed will be operational during the start-up phase of the TMX Upgrade machine and provide bench marks for future performance data. In addition to plasma diagnostic instrumentation, machine parameter monitoring systems will be installed prior to machine operation. Simultaneous recording of machine paramete… more

Moment-free toroidal magnet background of the invention

Description: A toroidal magnet is described for confining a high magnetic field for use in fusion reactor research and nuclear particle detection. The magnet includes a series of conductor elements arranged about and fixed at its small major radius portion to the outer surface of a central cylindrical support each conductor element having a geometry such as to maintain the conductor elements in pure tension when a high current flows therein, and a support assembly which redistributes all or part of the tens… more

Potential solver for sloshing-ion thermal barriers

Description: The quasineutrality equations at points (a) and (b) in a sloshing-ion thermal barrier are derived and an algorithm for their solution is given. The solution technique is sufficiently reliable and efficient to be used in a fluid code where it must be invoked at each time step. Circumstances under which the equations admit multiple solutions are noted and discussed.

Preliminary theoretical acoustic and rf sounding calculations for MILL RACE

Description: As participant in DOE/ISA's Ionospheric Monitoring Program, LLNL has the responsibility of providing theoretical understanding and calculational support for experimental activities carried out by Los Alamos National Laboratory in using ionospheric sounders to remotely detect violent atmospheric phenomena. We have developed a system of interconnected computer codes which simulate the entire range of atmospheric and ionospheric processes involved in this remote detection procedure. We are able to… more

Results of exploratory drill hole UE7nS East-Central Yucca Flat, Nevada Test Site

Description: Exploratory hole UE7nS was drilled to a depth of 672.1 m in East-Central Yucca Flat, Nevada Test Site, as part of a program sponsored by the Nuclear Monitoring Office (NMO) of the Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA). The purpose of the program is to determine the geologic and geophysical characteristics of selected locations that have demonstrated anomalous seismic signals. The purpose for drilling UE7nS was to provide the aforementioned data for emplacement site U7n. This report presents … more

Transport/installation of the MFTF magnet and magnetic-field measurements

Description: After the two C-coils were joined to form a yin-yang magnet, it was moved to the Mirror Fusion Test Facility (MFTF) at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. Additional preparatory work was done before the magnet assembly could be moved into the vacuum vessel for final hookup. Apparatus was designed and built to determine magnet mechanical and magnetic centerlines and establish a magnetic-field profile between the mirror points and yin-yang center. Hall probes were installed to measure mag… more
