Analytical results on leachings from Nutsche Filters

Description: This report describes results of an investigation to determine whether plutonium nitrates and lanthanum compounds were being entrained on the filter aid and filter block of the Nutsche Filters in Cell 2 of Bldg. 231. Leach samples were analyzed for La, Pu, phosphate, fluoride, Pu{sup 240}, and Am. From the data the authors concluded that the holdup on the Nutsche Filter is due to insoluble plutonium compounds either filtered from solution, or more likely, formed on the filter. These compounds w… more

Geological Investigation of Mexican Cry Mesa, Lukachukai District, Arizona with Diamond Drilling Recommendations

Description: Abstract: The Salt Wash member of the Jurassic Morrison formation of Mexican Cry Mesa, Lukachukai District, Arizona, was examined to determine size, grade, and distribution of contained carnotite deposits and the possibilities of developing reserves by exploratory drilling. Only three occurrences of carnotite-bearing sandstone were found in 17 miles of rim outcrop. Limited drilling is recommended in the vicinity of these exposures.

An investigation of convergent-divergent diffusers at Mach number 1.85

Description: Report presenting an investigation in the supersonic tunnel at Mach number 1.85 and angles of attack from 0 to 5 degrees to determine optimum design configurations for a convergent-divergent type of supersonic diffusers with a subsonic diffuser of 5 degrees included divergence angle. Total-pressure recoveries in excess of the theoretical recovery across a normal shock at a free-stream Mach number of 1.85 were obtained with a number of configurations.

Lift, drag, and pitching moment of low-aspect-ratio wings at subsonic and supersonic speeds: triangular wing of aspect ratio 4 with NACA 0005-63 thickness distribution, cambered and twisted for trapezoidal span load distribution

Description: "A wing-body combination having a triangular wing of aspect ratio 4 with NACA 0005-63 thickness distribution in streamwise planes, and cambered and twisted for a trapezoidal span distribution has been investigated at both subsonic and supersonic Mach numbers. The lift, drag, and pitching moment of the model are presented for Mach numbers from 0.25 to 0.96 and 1.20 to 1.70 at a Reynolds number of 1.5 million. The variations of the characteristics with Reynolds number are also shown for several M… more

NACA Investigations of Icing-Protection Systems for Turbojet-Engine Installations

Description: "Investigations have been made in flight and in wind tunnels to determine which components of turbojet installations are most critical in icing conditions, and to evaluate several methods of icing protection. From these studies, the requirements necessary for adequate icing protection and the consequent penalties on engine performance can be estimated. Because investigations have indicated that the compressor-inlet screen constitutes the greatest icing hazard and is difficult to protect, comple… more

The Solubility of Tributyl Phosphate in Aqueous Solutions

Description: Report describing a study regarding the solubility and related properties of tributyl phosphate (TBP), which has lower solubility in water than most uranium solvents. Pure TBP and TBP in an inert diluent were tested for solubility in water, several nitric acid solutions of varying concentrations, and other solutions typical of process streams. For TBP-diluent-water system tests, equilibrium water content in organic phase was found.

Some properties of beryllium oxide and beryllium oxide - columbium ceramals

Description: High-temperature tensile and thermal-shock investigations were conducted on beryllium oxide and beryllium oxide plus columbium metal additions. X-ray diffraction and metallographic results are given. The tensile strength of 6150 pounds per square inch for beryllium oxide at 1800 degrees F compared favorably with the zirconia bodies previously tested. Additions of 2, 5, 8, 10, 12, and 15 percent by weight of columbium metal failed to improve the shock resistance over that of pure beryllium oxide. more
